Mike

Angus got my dizzy rebuilt and got the Pertronix kit plus coil from him as well. So it should have worked properly. Don't know about the spark plugs, I'll have to look at that.

This is turning out to be very frustrating, everything I do seems to make a difference immediately and then the problems come back again. Have replaced the fuel and air filters. Plugs, leads, and coil. It is definitely more drivable now as it had deteriorsted to the point that it was pretty much missing all the time. Now it’s pretty good under load but there is a miss at cruise and it some rev ranges. The tacho sits pretty smoothly even when it is missing.

I think I am at the end of my ability, it’s going to the mechanic :?:

Are you using the reproduction Champion plug caps? These fail in exactly the way you describe.

Thanks all, Murphy’s law applies, it’s always the last thing you get to. It was the distributor cap.

Interesting.i had a repro dizzy cap that the spring-loaded center button broke cleanly off, right at the plastic. The car still ran, but had a random miss. Took me a bit of time to find, because the cap was only a couple of weeks old.

That is interesting, because when you looked closely at mine it looked like the rotor had become misaligned in some way and had scored the inside of the cap.

Mine wasn't cured first time but...

After replacing the Pertronix with points, the high speed was cured but low speed became terrible. Found the timing was out and was sorted. It now runs fine. Just goes to show the old ways are sometimes the best.

Now move on to the next problem

Now the distributor cap is fixed and it has new plugs, leads, distributor cap and rotor, and coil it is running beautifully, a little lumpy at idle but I can live with that. But The Pertronix doesnt seem to be causing the problems. I now have strong clean smooth power all through the rev range.

I think that the lumpy idle is pretty much par for the course with the 4.2.
The cars are nice when they're running well though.
