!!

I cant believe it!

I have never seen that happen before. At least it will be sorted out

a) at someone else's expense and

b) in the winter when you don't really want the car.

All the same?

Hi Steve, apparently it is a polyester spray filler and it is meant to be thick like that. Most of it comes off again. I would guess it takes out the big undulations but I am no expert.

The rest of the car had the same treatment. You can see in the first pics on this thread the main body tub in the same white spray filler. The second pic shows the tub finished in a 2pk primer. A lot of material came off between these two pics.

Just an update on the bonnet problem. Looking like the paint applied by IDL-UK was not specified by the paint manufacturer for automotive applications. They might have got away with it except that it was not properly activated. Maybe incorrect mixing or possibly just old activator product that had been sitting on a shelf for some time.

At the moment IDL-UK refusing to accept any liability whatsover however they have collected the bonnet and looks like they are prepared to just give the bonnet a quick blast and 'blow over'. What it really it needs to be dismantled and the job done again. This is the only way to ensure that there is no duff paint in any of the joints or in hidden recesses (there are plenty in the nose of an E-Type bonnet).

Also there is the question of all the wasted filler and prep work to the bonnet by Mechspray. So thats GBP4200 already paid to IDL-UK for the bonnet rebuild and another bill for GBP2000 for prep work on the bonnet by Mechspray. And basically back at square one, with IDL-UK unwilling to accept any liability or even to answer the phone to discuss the remedial work that they intend to (or not to) do.

Its not looking good.

Thanks Steve. I would appreciate that as unfortunately at the moment it is looking like it will end up getting messy.

I will give some feedback on how things go. Hopefully IDL will do the right thing and deliver a bonnet to the standard that one would expect from a company that specialises in manufacturing new E Type body tubs.

The bonnet is back from IDL but now has fresh damage (photo). Bonnet will need extra fitting and panel work estimated at GBP500 and more filling work estimated at GBP1500!

Clearly, they have no respect for you and your car. You will never get anywhere by trying to reason with them personally.

If it was me in this position I would see 3 possible courses of action.

1. Go legal
2. Go illegal.
3. Walk away and chalk it up to posterity. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

I certainly wouldn't recommend option 2. Option 1 does not guarantee success but does guarantee you additional costs that you are not necessarily going to recover. Option 3 is very distasteful.

If you can find a way via the small claims court then maybe that's the answer. At least you know what your costs will be in advance.

Stuart

Hi Stuart, yes I think you are right. How can you trust/ work with a garage that won't admit their failings and just try to pass the cost of putting right their mistakes on the customer. Any decent garage/ paintshop would have taken it on the chin and done the right thing. With what I have been charged so far its not as if they would be making a loss! I think best I get my car out of there.

PS - currently taking up option 1 via small claims court.

I think that's a good idea. It doesn't cost a fortune and I know of a few people that have succeeded in getting an award where they wouldn't necessarily have done so due to the costs involved with full court proceedings.

That said, it's one thing getting the award but that doesn't mean you ever see the money.

As for them being capable of standing the cost, you never know what kind of financial state they are in. Their directors might have a gambling habit!

Stuart
