Heater return pipe?
#1 Heater return pipe?
One of the many things that had been removed from my car when I bought it was a 2ft long steel pipe with 2 mounting brackets. It's item 51 [C24311] in the heater box section of the SNBG catalogue. The bulkhead end of this pipe obviously connects via a rubber hose to one of those pesky "stuck behind the dashboard" heater pipes, but where does the front end connect to? And to what do the brackets attach? My car [1R20498] is a fairly late S2 with only a gas strut on the bonnet and ballast resistor ign.
Perhaps someone could post a picture?
Thanks in advance.
Andy

Hi Andy
I have a late S2 that is the same as yours (strut / ballast resistor). Let me have a look tonight and will get you a photo or two.
cheers

It connects on the other side to the water pump, and the two brackets are fixed to the inlet manifold studs.

Andy, if you're interested and your tube is a bit silted up then Dave K on the forum makes them in stainless and at a better price than SNGB

and of course the other option is just to use a single long length of rubber hose from the bulkhead to the back of the water pump.

Isnt there a pipe [with a Tee in] that connects from a hose on back of water pump to another hose that connects to bulkhead tube ?
that pipe is supported from brackets bolted on the carb flanges ?
Doesnt the Tee feed the manifold ? hence not a straight connection from water pump to bulkhead ?

The T pipe is only for the US export cars with Strombergs. It allows water to flow from the secondary inlet manifold jacket back to the main circuit.

Not good, unless you find hose that has a different bore at each end...johnetype wrote:and of course the other option is just to use a single long length of rubber hose from the bulkhead to the back of the water pump.

Hi Andy
Your question has probably been answered by the other posts but I promised a photo or two so here you go. Plus it tests my ability to post a picture!
As already described - pipe runs behind inlet manifold, uses manifold studs and connects to water pump.
cheers

Thanks everyone, and Ash, thanks for the pictures. Not having the engine and water pump to hand [they're down at VSE] didn't help. Ash - I notice that you have a 123 distributor fitted that has a vacuum advance? I recently had a big Healy that had a 123 dist that was totally electronic - you could select one of a number of advance curves - and the engine ran absolutely faultlessly. Is there a reason you have a vacuum advance or is it just an earlier model? I think on one of the latest 123 models you can set the advance curve using bluetooth?

Hi Andy
Yes, the version of 123 I fitted last winter from SNG still required the vacuum advance. The curves have to be set manually on mine. The later ones can be set with bluetooth.
There are some great posts on here regarding the 123 system and many differing views. Indeed I caused a fair bit of discussion whilst I was considering whether to fit the system.
All I can say is that mine is absolutely faultless to-date. Left it on default curve when fitted and the car, whilst always a great starter, now starts as if on an electric switch. Runs beautifully too, noticeably smoother.
Changed all other components at same time as recommended - sports coil, new leads, plugs.
cheers
