#1 Series 2 Automatic gearbox leak

Post by Amarksherwood@gmail.com » Wed Feb 28, 2018 3:25 pm

Hi
I have a series 2, 2 plus 2, 4.2 1969. There is a leak from the gearbox, red fluid on the garage floor. A local garage told me it was the sump gasket, which has been replaced, but it is still leaking. I wanted to know if anyone has had work done at Stantons in Tonbridge, Kent - http://www.stantonautomatics.co.uk/. They seem very knowledgeable, but I don't want to let someone work on the car who does not know what they are doing. If not these guys, is there anywhere else that could be recommended.

Don't know anything about these guys. The last 2+2 auto we replaced the sump gasket on we had to straighten out the sump face first. They are only a thin steel and deform very easily. If they didn't straighten it out first then chances are the new gasket will still leak.

There is seal on the manual selector shaft which might be leaking, transmission fluid may then spread and make it look like a pan gasket leak.

Thanks Bob, that is exactly what they said might be the cause of the leak, when I popped in there the other day (without the car) They did say it was an engine out job, do you know if this is true?

Hi Bob,
I have a series 2, 2+2 auto box I have taken out of my car,
I think it’s probably worthless. If you need to scavenge parts - give me a shout.
I believe this is in the true spirit of the forum?!
Cheers,
Rich

It looks as if the selector shaft has a flange outboard of the seal which would mean the shaft has to come out to change the seal. Whether this is possible via a combination of access through the removable plate on the left side of the transmission tunnel and removal of the sump pan I don't know. You could try jag-lovers.com as there is likely to be a lot more experience in the US of E Types with auto boxes than in the UK.
