I know that this subject has been covered before but I am after some definitive answers!
1. Are “new” water pumps available or is it a case of reconditioning the old one?
2. What is the best way to tackle this job? Eg it would be easier to remove bonnet but is this necessary? Can the pump be removed without raising the engine to clear the front crossmember?
Any comments/advise from those who have done this job would be appreciated!

Hi Andy
I cannot help with an answer to question 1.
Q2. The water pump can be removed without any need to disturb the engine or remove the bonnet. Once you remove the 4 bolts on the outer pulley you can remove this with the pump in situ. It is easier if you can split the 2 pulleys and remove the outer one first. The 4 bolts hold the 2 pulleys onto the pump.
It’s a tight squeeze but not a difficult job.
Lots of tape and padding if you worry about picture frame scratches!
Cheers
Ash

‘New’ pumps are available but the parts aren’t interchangeable with the original units as far as I know, if you have access the a press then fitting a rebuild kit to your original unit isn’t very difficult.

#4 Re: Water pump
xks.com made up new water pumps with new castings for all the variations. They have now been bought out by Moss. I emailed Moss to see if they are making some of these parts available in the UK market. They have no current plans to do so "en masse" but will provide quotes for supply to the UK if you email their sales manager.

I‘ve the WP out at the moment. If you raise the bonnet vertical access is much easier:
