#1 What attaches here?

Post by mach2andy » Wed Nov 21, 2018 4:34 pm

I think that the front horizontal exhaust heat shield [C25101] attaches to the tab arrowed in this photo. Is that correct?
Thanks in advance.

That's the underside of car Andy?

I was going to say the bracket that joins clutch fixed/flexible pipes from master cylinder to slave cylinder but it's too low I think.

I am under mine tonight removing torsion bars so will take a look and revert if you haven't had other responses by then.

cheers

Hi Ash
Yes this is the underside. This is the rear part of the gearbox tunnel. The 5 holes on the LHS of the picture are where the rear engine [gearbox support] mount bolts to the car.
I think I've got it right in this picture. The heat shield in question has a bracket [with a captive nut] sticking out from it's rear edge. This bracket secures the rear of the shield to the rear engine [gearbox support] mount. The shield also has 2 brackets on the side. These brackets must attach the shield to the LH frame rail. So I still don't know what attaches to the lug in question?

Hi Andy

Was underneath tonight and yes you have the layout correct in your second photograph.

That mysterious lug must be behind the heat shield so I could not see it. The two right angle lugs on your heat shield are mounted to the body with self tappers so it' not anything to do with those.

Anyway, my engine out in the next couple of weeks so all of those shields and brackets to come off (mine are not quite as clean as yours!). So will report back when I do that job.

cheers

Hi Ash
I'm sure you're aware that if the shield is original, the insulating material will be asbestos. If you think to pass on what attaches to the lug, great. Maybe someone else will chip in at some stage?

Hi again Andy

So heat shield and gearbox bracket removed today.

And I too have that lug, with a slip-over clip that would accommodate a self tapping style screw. But nothing attached to it at all.

To be honest it sits so close to the heat shield that I cannot see what function it could provide.

My heat shield is 100% guaranteed to be original so it’s not as if a replacement part has covered up an original fitting.

Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

Cheers

Hi Ash
When I trial fitted the heat shield, I found that the hole in the middle of the shield - arrowed in the pic - lines up perfectly with the lug. So I guess it's a forth attachment point for the shield?
Best of luck with your engine.

Interesting Andy - maybe a missing self tapper from a previous removal but I don't recall a hole aligning to the position of the lug.

One for a check tomorrow...
