#1 Series 2 DHC Blue Reg 3WBJ - Circa 1980

Hi
I've been routing through old photos today and come across one I took out of the back window of my Dad's Renault 12TS en-route to Cornwall in about 1980 when I was not even into my teens!

It's of a blue S2 registered 3WBJ. According to DVLA that number now belongs to a Mitsubishi. I wondered if anyone on here happened to know the current owner and I can post them the photo.

Realise it's a long shot...

Shaun

Unusual to see the plate hanging there :geek:

Angus has done the same with his FHC:

Ah-ha. If anyone knows what they're doing it'll be Angus, but does that not further restrict the S1's already fairly heavily taxed flow of cooling air?

Doesn’t appear to restrict airflow Simon. It’s where the original plate was fitted in the US so I just carried on the tradition. The bonnet had all the fittings in place to accept fitting the plate here and it hinges when you open the bonnet.

That's no excuse for bad taste, Angus. One of the aesthetics of an E Type is having the registration number across the bonnet, not hanging underneath as though someone just thought "we'll nail it on here"

I like it....nice clean lines of the bonnet not interupted by an after thought of sticking a vinyl number acress it.....Steve

If I'm honest Geoff, I agree, I prefer the stick on but also see what Steve says about purity of line. (And, it isn't 'just nailed on' )

The Europa Special had it best. Cheap house numbers and letters, available from any hardware store, clipped to the protective mesh inside the 'mouth':

That's on account of wot, being a Colin Chapman product, the mesh the numbers was attached to was also sourced from the same cheap hardware store as the numerals...

Fantastic cars though. I used to have Special in yellow just like the one in the photo. Happy days....

I'm all for purity of form, but can you imagine 77 RW or 9600 HP turning up at Geneva with an offcut of tin "nailed" to the bottom of the air intake. What would Lyons have said

Already off topic - It depends on colour and size of the plate; think of the tiny Italian old style front plates. Our current huge white Austrian plates are an aesthetic disaster and - mounted below the air intake- definitely something Sir Lyons would not have approved of.

Angus' FHC is practically totally Factory original, including the paintwork. He agonised over the front plate but reasoned that as the car was destined for the USA the Factory supplied it with the tilting number plate holder and therefore he should keep it that way. He had a miniature front plate made to fit the holder. I quite like it as it reveals the beautiful curve of the bonnet uninterrupted by a black oblong, which always was an aesthetic disaster.

Then we should be eternally grateful Angus's car didn't have Amco bars

It did but they were not a Factory option so were removed.
