hello all,
I want to purchase a trickle battery charger.
Any recommendations for a suitable / reliable one?

I use an optimate, always found them really good. Doesn't just trickle charge - tests the battery automatically every 12 hours, desulphates, puts in appropriate level of charge, etc etc. My battery is now nearly 15 years old, and SEEMS to be as good as new.
Not the cheapest, but works well. Get one for the right amp hours - they do smaller ones for bike batteries. Even the car one is only a small unit.
Here's a link - the optimate 4 isn't powerful enough, you need the 6.

I’ve got a Ring unit. Cheap but not recommended.
Series 1 FHC purchased 40 years ago. Courted my wife in it.
Series 1 2+2 when the kids were small now sold.
Series 1.5 OTS in opalescent maroon, Californian car. My retirement present.

I've been using one of these for years. It senses the battery voltage, charges it up if needed and then adds charge from time to time if needed. I leave it on at all times unless I plan on driving again in the next day or two or while I'm on an overnight trip.
I have no idea how old the battery was in my E when I bought it in 2008, but with the battery tender, I got another nine years out of the battery before it failed. During that time, I had two alternator failures (finally replaced the Lucas with a Delco one wire), so that probably added to the demise of the battery.

I’m very happy with the CTEK MXS 5.0 . I’ve tried others over the years but this one is by the best I’ve found.

Malcolm makes a great point.....batteries don't die on there own......you have to kill them !! LOL As for a battery tender, well, get a Battery Tender ! Most are cheap and reliable.
