Two carb set up
#1 Two carb set up
I own a series 2 2+2 ex usa. My mechanic is finding it difficult to set up the carbs. He has asked me to ask if the manifold butterflies need to be in use. What, I hear you ask! Any help much appreciated. Is there a paper available to work from? Thank you. Tony

The secondary manifold butterflies are NOT needed, and actually interfere with the flow of air/fuel. The simplest method is to simply lock the secondaries open. The next, better method is to remove the butterfly plates from the secondary rods and leave the rods in place to prevent air from coming in through the sides. The next step is to remove the rods as well and plug the holes the rod went through. The final and best solution is to remove everything and sleeve the secondary manifold with a thin brass tube that is either cryo fitted or interference fitted to the intake bore. This completely removes all of the pressure drop across the secondary manifold.

It depends exactly which two carb Stromberg setup you have but there is actually very little for your mechanic to play with - that's deliberate so folks couldn't mess with settings to upset the emissions.
As said, you need to hold the secondary throttles permanently open and apart from balancing the carbs and possibly replacing the rubber diaphragms they should at least run reasonably well without touching anything else.
The standard Jaguar workshop manual gives chapter and verse.

Without knowing precisely what his difficulties may be, I will strongly recommend adjustable jets for the 69-vintage Stromberg carbs , which have non-adjustable jets.
We could not tune the "lean" out of my carbs. Joe Curto adjustable jets were a godsend. REALLY woke up the motor and made tuning and balancing a breeze.
I've said it before and ill say it again: "thank you, Joe!"
Ps: I also removed the secondary butterflies from my intake.
