#1 Under body and wheel arch colours

Post by Monkeyfinger » Tue Nov 26, 2019 1:04 pm

Starting to have discussions with my restorer regarding the above. Since my car is back to bare metal, I have the unexpected choice of how to finish and colour the whole car. Original colour is old English white, which I plan to keep (probably...). Now thinking if underside should be black or body colour. Any opinions and also info on how the car would have been from the factory. Quite tempted by how good the car could look with white undersides, but obviously that would have its drawbacks!

I took my car to metal, also. Sprayed on 2 part epoxy zinc chromate primer (Variprime). Seam sealed all the joints, and then sprayed 3M "rock guard" onto the primer/sealer, and then painted with single stage Old English White (tougher paint than base/clear). Same for the wheel wells and the wheel wells under the bonnet. NO black or undercoating. Gets a little dirty looking after driving awhile, but cleans up well and I don't think it will be subject to rust. I'm in the USA and after a 6 year restoration I try not to drive in the rain (I have other cars for that). Being in the UK you will definitely have a different experience with weather and road conditions.

Thanks Jeff, that is massively useful. Great that you chose the same colour as me! There is no way this car will ever be used in all weathers again after this investment, and I like the idea of having a much clearer view of the underside and being able to spot any problems etc. I've no idea what you are suggesting about UK weather however...

Hi Richard,
I also have an original OEW car and went back to white arches when having a full bare metal respray as a principle.
On the front arches I have left the lower panel below bonnet rubber seal black though, so when it goes round the back of the wheel it matches up with the inner protection panel, looks quite good but I'm not sure it's correct :?:

Hi Mike - understood. I think I will look at this when the time comes and see what works. I think I will need to check the white paint codes when I get to that point.
Mine is a fairly early S2, registered Jan 69, and my body guy reckoned that mine was a bit creamier than the average whites. Sounds delicious but may need some research!

Richard, In 1969, the color was called "Cream". Here is a link to find the color by year and the paint code. My OEW was called "Austin Healey" white.

Thanks Jeff - I think the penny has been dropping with that, and I believe the later OEW is 'whiter'. I still have some original paint on the bonnet, so that can be my reference.

My '69 is OEW. I have parked next to a number of same/similar year OEW's, and all looked slightly different! Not sure there is one true OEW which all can aspire to?

Well, after 50 years it's unlikely there's a true coloured reference example in existence anywhere! Even original paint will look different according to how hard a life it has lead.

And every different shade of light makes them look lighter or darker.

For sheer durability you could put UPOL Raptor over the epoxy primer. It can be tinted to match body colour.

Richard
Have a look at this site which has some good observations on colours including Cream/OEW

and

Richard,
Jaguar heritage confirmed to me that OEW was actually a S3 colour, but Jaguar tried it out on the later S2's during the final year of production 70/71 which is what mine was, so I ended up using WT3 Old English White - Product Description 7110 2K, a British Leyland OEW.
As your car is a 69 it will be listed as cream, so I would carefully research that for the correct codes and get some testers made up before you decide what you want.

Seems there is a Cream/OEW can of worms...
My car was registered 24th Jan 1969 - so I guess may have been in build late 68?
Since my knowing the car from 1977, the colour was always quoted on documentation as OEW, although individuals have often looked at it and called it Cream. From the large variety of information sources, it looks like it may actually be officially Cream. I have a heritage certificate on the way, so it will be interesting to see what Jaguar wrote in their production records. Starting to think I should play it safe and paint it red!

Yours being an OTS, I would stay with the OEW instead of the "resale" red. If you want some red, the hood would be nice in that color.

Here is picture of my MGB in that combo.

Lovely MG. I wasn't serious about the red! I have a picture of myself and my brother sat in the Jag when I was 13 in 1977. I'm not planning on changing what I've known and loved for so long.

Richard
I forgot to mention that in the link I gave above, if you click on the colours in the colour chart it opens up with the paint codes, paint manufacturers and more info as to when used

Good news as now you know. You can now go to the site I mentioned and get the manufacturers original paint code
