#1 Stromberg Carburetor Link Wanted

Post by CTDavies » Sun Dec 01, 2019 7:48 am

Hi all,
I‘m looking for the link that connects the Stromberg carburetors to the slave shaft. It can be seen in this picture here. Any help is appreciated. Thanks,
Chris

you could probably make one from materials available or make one from modern components like I did.
Because of thickness issues with modern carb gaskets I found the original linkage was too short to work correctly.

I used threaded rod ends from Speedwaymotors.com and some threaded rod to make my own version.

Bob, do you still have the secondary throttle plates connected? Can’t be sure from the photo but I hope you haven’t?

Hi Peter,
Mine are still connected. To be honest I gave it a try removing them and I felt the car idled poorly. And I didn't recall really feeling much difference in performance without them. So rather than chase the problem by adjusting carbs I put them back in. I spent my time making sure the secondaries operate as they should by adjusting that linkage so that they open fully on WOT of the mains.

Fair enough. You may be the exception that proves the rule and/or there is something else in play.

I can't comment on the idle issue, although intuitively one would think that idle, or very slight throttle, would be the classic condition in which one would notice no change. You are right, of course, that once the secondaries are wide-open, be it through normal linkage or being wired/jammed open, the performance would be the same and removing them would give only a small extra gain on top of that.

The big benefit that I found, and seemingly everyone reports, is greatly improved responsiveness and mid-range during the transition from, say, 1/4 throttle to 3/4, i.e. normal driving. Certainly in setups employing the full crossover plumbing, it's easy to see why a straight shot of cool mixture performs better than a warm mixture forced to take the longer and narrower route. If your car has the capped-off, non-crossover system, then I could see the benefits being less noticeable.

Peter,
I don't doubt the improvements without the secondaries. It's something I may go re-investigate again someday. I think I had just rebuilt the carbs at the same time and was probably just happy everything was running so well. Secondly I drive pretty much like an old man now!! I really just cruise and enjoy the ride. While not afraid to tackle anything on the car and do all my own work, I am just happy it starts and lets me cruise around with a smile.

oh, and yes, my car is the mid production S2 with the capped off crossover port.

Perfectly sound logic. Long may you enjoy the car at your own pace.
