Gearbox Tunnel Foam BD27833

I am replacing the gear lever rubber gaiter on the gearbox cover because it is old and torn. Whilst I was there I removed the gearbox cover to also fit the gearbox tunnel foam. My question is which way round is the foam fitted? Does anyone have any photos of it in place.

The reason I ask is that it is not obvious how it fits. The foam has a roughly central small hole and the rear corners are cut away. The illustration on the SNGB website suggests that it is fitted with the longer dimension along the length of the car but this would mean that the rear end would interfere with the gear lever or the front end would have to be tucked up around the bell housing.

Thus a photo to show one installed would be very helpful.

Rather than pay Barratts £30 for a bit of foam, I got an offcut of epdm foam from a local company for £3.00 and made my own.

Indeed, silence is, I think, the chief function.





I made mine to measure from dense closed-cell black foam, and used some dimpled aluminium reflective insulation (left over from the tunnel-wall insulation) to protect it from gearbox heat, reckoning that this would prolong its life.

I think this sandwich is also a good way of reducing heat coming into the cockpit ?

Definitely to reduce heat ingress - I also stuffed some foam between both tunnel sides and gearbox. Made the cabin noticably cooler when driving in summer heat for several hours on the motorway.
