#1 Fuel tank sump removal

Post by MichaelDesna » Fri Jun 05, 2020 2:15 pm

Hello Gents,
I am new to this forum as I recently acquired a half restored 1971 E Type, Series 2, with the 4.2 engine, and is a 2 +2 model. It hasn't run in 6 years and I am trying to get it running again. I have worked on my American cars and trucks for many years but this car is totally new to me. I have a couple books to learn from but many things are not in the books or they are confusing. I would like to know what is the correct way to remove the sump that is on the bottom of the fuel tank. I removed the drain plug and that is as far as I have gone. Do I use the nut the plug screws into to remove the sump or do I use an oil filter wrench around the whole sump to unscrew it from the tank ? Also, the car has 2 Stromberg carburetors and I am trying to find the "banjo bolts" so I can clean the carburetor filters. For the life of me, I cannot find them on the carburetors or maybe this vehicle doesn't have them at all ? Please help with some pictures if you can. Thank you very much. -Mike

Yes, use the nut on the sump to unscrew it.

I don’t think there are any banjo bolts on Stromberg carbs. The ones that were on my car just had a flexible fuel pipe connected to a stub on each carb. The only filter is the one in the glass bowl on the bulkhead.

Have you got a genuine workshop manual?

Okay, thanks a lot, Tom. I have the "E-Type Owner's Workshop Manual" by Kenneth Ball and "The Complete Official Jaguar "E"" by Robert Bentley. Can you suggest a better one ? I do have the "glass bowl" on the car which filter I am waiting for a replacement from SNG Barratt. Do you suggest removing the fuel sump and cleaning it out ? The car hasn't been started for 6 years but was "running when parked" although a bit rich as the spark plugs were all black when I removed them.
Thank you,
Mike

Hi Mike. If you're in the US can i recommend the Jag Lovers forum to you as well https://forums.jag-lovers.com/?

It is based in the US whereas this forum is based in the UK. You'll be able to get local advice.

WRT the fuel sump yes just unscrew it. Be aware that the sump is brass so be careful applying pressure to the hex.

Michael

The official Jaguar Service Manual is very good and the Spares Parts Catalogue even more essential. Both available from Amazon. Also check out the Forum Knowledge Base which has a huge amount of information with links and downloads covering almost everything you will need to know.

The ultimate book on the S2 is this one: http://www.xkebooks.com/

Not cheap but stunningly detailed with lots of drawings (which the official Spare Parts Catalogue lacks). Also check out the SNG barratt web site as they have lots of excellent drawings. Here is the one for the fuel tank:

Thanks, guys, for all that useful information. I will look up those books and attempt to take off the sump today.

I got the sump off today and was surprised that it came off quite easily with a 1 foot breaker bar. It was completely full of rust and other debris. Should there be some kind of filter on the pick up tube because there was nothing there ? Also, does anyone have a picture of what I think is the throttle return spring and what it connects to ? It looks like the top half rusted off and broke off in the middle. There is a small hole on the linkage above the bracket that the bottom part is attached to but I want to make sure before I start it up some time later this week after sitting for 6 years ! Thanks !

Do you have a photo of the bit you’re talking about with the throttle return spring? There’s a spring in the pedal housing, on the bulkhead, and there’s return springs on the carbs themselves.

Tom,
Here is a picture of the spring on the carburetor that I'm talking about. The one one the bulkhead is fine. I got one from the local hardware store that is most similar to the broken one until I can find out for sure which one from Barratts is the correct one as they have a few on there. So is it connected correctly ?
Thanks,

I think that’s the secondary throttle return spring, C23853.

Yes, Tom. Even though I don't know much about these cars at the moment, that would make sense considering the primary spring is on the bulkhead. Thanks again for your help !

I mean it’s the spring for the secondary throttle butterflies.

Thanks, Tom. I looked up that number on Barratts and it said the part is "unavailable". I will have to call them tomorrow and see it they have a replacement.
Thank you,
Mike

Yes, part 20 in the diagram. It references to Jaguar part C21900 available from SNGB.

Yes, I got the new filter. But when I install the sump on the tank do you guys recommend putting anything on the sump gasket like motor oil and should i put anything on the threads like plumber's tape ? Thanks !

Hi...just pay attention fitting the sump......i think the supplied gasket/seal are rubber that can distort as you tighten the sump and cause a leak....original seal was i think a fibre......anyway i would use a sealant Hylomar or something of your choice and ensure the seal is a good fit....just partially fill the tank to check for leaks...Steve

Hi Steve,
The guy at SNG Barratts (USA) suggested that I use a fiber washer instead of the rubber one so that's what I have. Thanks !
