Hi, my PO had three coils on each side of the boot but also had a piece of wood left in the boot to hold the lid up. I have added 3 more to each side and the boot lid still only stays open about 5 inches... (PO installed a luggage rack on the lid, so I have some weight to offset here)... just bought 6 more springs... has anyone put up to 9 on each side? Installing 6 was not easy, not looking forward to trying to do 9. I know I need to purchase a new bolt to attach them... but is this a crazy thing to try to do?
Thx
BB

Thanks Geoff... will do some more digging! My hope is to get the boot to stay up but no lose a finger or two in the process!

Seven or more springs is usually what is required if there is a luggage rack.

#6 Re: Maximum # of Boot Coil Springs?
I managed to get 9 springs on each coil tonight. The "trick" I used to make it easier than the last time I did it was to use a longer bolt (about 1" long) to attach the coil to the base and left about a 1/4" of slack in the bolt so that pulling the individual springs out from the center of the coil before rotating and pulling them onto the anchor bolt. The looseness allowed alot easier movement of the springs as I rotated them. Installation back under the boot will happen in a couple days and I will be able to see if 9 springs is enough to hold up the boot lid and luggage rack. Fingers crossed!

Well the answer is... 9 springs did it. Boot pops up nicely even with a luggage rack installed. Hopefully I don't need to do this repair again in my lifetime!
