#1 Wiper wiring help needed

Post by Pianoman » Thu Oct 22, 2020 2:18 pm

Physically/visually where do the wires go from the back of wiper switch? I have power going in and out of the switch but I cant find where the wires go next apart from back into the loom.
Thanks

Donal, I trust you have a copy of the owner’s manual and have looked here:
http://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=700

Colour diagrams and location of wiring looms are very helpful, plus this company will sell you a book of wiring diagrams broken into sections to make it easier to follow:
https://coventryautocomponents.co.uk/index.html
This will help you trace some of them, but they all disappear into those taped up looms, so not easy to trace but from the diagrams you can do some continuity testing to the wiper motor itself.

Donal,
I presume when you say where do they go in the loom you mean where do the come out.
Assuming I am reading the right S2 diagram you have 5 wires to the switch and 5 wire to the wiper motor. 0ne wire to the switch is from fuse 6. One wire is to earth and the other 3 go to the wiper motor. On the motor one wire is from fuse 7. One wire is to earth and the other three are from the switch. How they get from the switch to the motor is via the loom we we just have to accept is one of life's mysteries, unless you want to unwrap it all.

Is your motor not working and are you trying to trace the fault.

I almost sound as if I know what I am talking about but I just happen to have my motor and switch out at the moment and have been guided by other members of the forum and fixed my problem.

Thank you Tony, you're a life saver. Yes I've been systematically trying to sort out my electrics. Everything worked until I had work done on my engine. Previously the car had been sitting for 40 years and has undergone a year of recommissioning . Ive gotten everything back working except the wipers. These wiring diagram just look like lines to me when Im actually in the car and trying to trace them. Ive spent 2 weeks so far trying to get these wipers going . Lets see how I get on today
thanks again

Success, I got them going. Turns out there was no earth. Next question ... on the wiper motor, where exactly does that black lead actually earth to on the car??

Had to find it myself. Just in case someone else finds themselves in the same situation, the answer is, there is an earth that is attached to the mounting for the washers. Wiring diagrams only tell you so much, trying to locate some of them for me was the toughest part.
