#1 S2 Ignition Switch Bracket
Hi All,
My 1970 UK Coupe has the Circular type ignition switch without the steering lock. It appears to be the original unit and shares the same key as the doors. It is fixed to the underside of the dash with a home made bracket. I would like to replace it with the correct bracket which I think fits to the steering assembly. Having researched this matter, most contemporary cars seam to have the steering lock version (of which there seems to be different versions). Is this bracket still available as all the main parts providers seem to only offer the Steering lock version? I have seen photos of what appears to be the bracket I am after but have been unable to find one to purchase. Am I correct that some S2s didn’t have the steering lock fitted?
I have bought and restored a Britax combined steering lock and switch assembly that is contemporary with my car but would prefer to use the original non steering lock version.
Any help appreciated.

Hi...this link should give you more info.....S2 cars did not all have the steering lock and i think there were 2 variations on bracket to hold the ignition switch......depending on your chassis number and you identifying what the part number should be on that car then you can search suppliers.....Steve viewtopic.php?t=11280

I had found this thread but was not clear if the bracket shown was original. This is I believe the bracket I am after but have not managed to find a supplier.
The main reason for not wanting to fit the Britax unit is twofold.
1. Originality, as the current switch which is the original unit, uses the same key for the ignition and the doors. Fitting the Britax unit will introduce the need for another key.
2. I am nervous about issues I have read with the locking mechanism seizing. This problem, I would imaging would be a pain to rectify if the shear bolt is used to secure the unit to the steering column.

That’s a new one on me, be interested to hear where you found that info and if others on here have actually had problems.
But it’s up to you and maybe Barrie can help you out.

Hi.. ...yes the steering lock can seize iv had one 40 years ago that had to be cut off......but its not a common problem.....you dont even have to use sheer bolts you can use standard if needed....Steve.....Edit...just found lots of info here on the US Jag lovers forum that should help....https://forums.jag-lovers.com/t/ignitio ... mma/395261

I have a US spec early 69 FHC that came with A/C and it doesn't have the steering lock ignition switch. The A/C was removed by a PO. As far as I can tell some of the S2 cars that came with A/C did not have ignition lock switches because of the length of the evaporator and the ignition switch was attached with a simple plate to the end of the evaporator controls.
My evaporator was removed so the bracket was bent 90°and attached to the new radio console.
Here's a photo of my switch bracket that looks stock.

Just putting up this view for Darren of a US S1.5/2 car. The indicator and the ignition switch housing are reversed on a UK car - meaning a small modification to the ignition switch bracket (to allow the wiring to pass through) The steering lock casting - which is unused in this instance - is visible.

I suspect there there's a few of us out there who need this bracket for the ignition switch, I certainly do so could I ask that as it passes from Barrie to Darren it goes via SNG Barrett so they have the opportunity to scan it with their laser scanner which would give them the opportunity to see about having some manufactured to help the rest of us?

I agree a few of us could need this including me.
When I did my RHD conversion I moved the switch to the other side of the column. Cant think why now but it was needed.
I recall that I had to redrill the bracket to get the screw holes in the correct place to avoid fouling.
Or have I done it wrong!

I seem to have started something here - thanks for all the feedback and interest. As Barrie has stated his bracket is for LHD. I can only assume there was a RHD version, as I have seen photos of RHD installations as seen here.
