#1 fumes from dipstick hole

Post by Pianoman » Wed Feb 03, 2021 2:36 pm

As the title says I have fumes coming from the dipstick hole. Is there a seal missing or what could be the problem? thanks

Does this car have anything that passes for a PCV system? Would it not be a good idea for the crankcase fumes be drawn into the carburettors? If not, then the seals will simply be put under pressure until an oil leak is created as the fumes condense and are pumped out elsewhere.

kind regards
Marek

Donal and Marek : yes, the 6 cylinder cars have ( or should have ) a collection device at the front of the top dome at the front of the engine, which is connected by flexible hose , usually of the corrugated metallised cardboard type , to a port on the inner face of the trifurcated backplate which connects the carburetters to the air filter plenum chamber . If crankcase pressure is building then it seems likely that this system is clogged, which does happen particularly if the engine is only run for short periods

Thanks Christopher, that would make perfect sense as the car is only started and not driven during this winter. How can I approach a fix to this?
