Series II -- sacrilege to use press in washer jets?
#1 Series II -- sacrilege to use press in washer jets?
Just got a beautiful new (to me) baby blue Series II. Noticed the entire windscreen spray system is missing! 'Have been reading about the joys of installing washer jets!
Would it be sacrilege to simply install press in ones, such as these (would need to find ones that fit):

Thx!

Howard

Assuming you have the holes in the body, while not an easy job it's far from impossible.
Buy twice as much tube as you need. If you can source a small child with little hands it makes it easier.
Fit enough tube to each washer barb so that it will give you at least a foot extra.
Feed the hose through the hole and wangle it out of one of the 3 rectangualr-ish holes inside the car.
Slide the wingnut onto the hose and up to the washer and screw it on.
Push a long piece of hose through the bulkhead.
Attach the hoses together with a T.
You're good to go.
If you need extra room you can drop the wiper rack out of the way, but be very careful not to drop the die cast spacers into the void below. They are not magnetic and you'll never get them back.

That's great if you have the dash top removed Andrew, but a pain if all the dash is in place. It's not impossible, I know this because I helped a forum member do it.
Talking of sacrilege, what about putting grommets into the holes and then pushing an original chrome nozzle into that with the hose attached? Feed some mig wire through first so you can guide the tube to where you want it.
Only a thought and admittedly a compromise if a quicker solution is needed. You could always fit them properly if you pull the dash out at a later date.

Plus the two chrome trims at each end, disconnect the vent hoses and squeeze between the screen and the rest of the dash. Then put it all back together. Have you tried it with the screen in, it's challenging to say the least though I didn't have the excellent assistance you had. They moved it to the power bulge on the S3 for a reason.
Back to the OP, don't be put off, it can be done with a bit of patience, perseverance and preferably some small hands.

And use transparent silicone hose not PVC.
- It's easier to push onto the washer jet barbs
- It'll won't blow off if the jets get blocked
- It's more flexible so easier to place and doesn't go rigid with age
- It can't be seen so you can't be flogged for it - unless you're a concours fanatic in which case you deserve to be flogged anyway

It happened before the S3; S2 2+2 cars with the less abrupt slope to the windscreen had them located in the bonnet. No point in making assembly on the production line difficult for difficult sake. And with the cars that did have the washers mounted in the scuttle panel, I suspect that they and windscreen wiper mechanism were put in place very early in the process; long before the dash top was installed.
Even with the additional fasteners you refer to, its not such a big job to remove the dash top and it makes the job many times easier than with the dash top in place. Often its a case of never enough time to do the job right, but always enough time to do it again, or eventually the right way. A bit like those that say that an XK engine can be removed from an E Type without removing the reaction plate. Even if possible, why would you try it that way.
I'm with Andrew; remove the dash top to give every chance of success.

Bill

Thanks Bill,
Sorry, I wasn't advocating leaving the dash in place to do it properly just being unnecessarily pedantic about what was involved removing and re fitting the dash in contrast to the much more uplifting, less pessimistic, get on with it Antipodean view.
The options dependent on skills available were 1. Bodge it by inserting original chrome washer jets into grommets or 2. Remove the dash top and do it properly.
I would be leaning towards the latter but it's up to Howard.

Why not just go the Series 3 system - if you are worried about originality at least you are using an e-type system rather than a a non original plastic push in system.

Thanks, everyone. Parts on order. Haven't yet opened up the dash to look at the job, but hoping I can fish the hose up (or down), attach the sprayer to the hose and fit it to the hole, tighten by twisting while holding the wingnut in place with a pair of hemostats. Not sure how to tighten the last bit.
