Cylinder 6-5-4 not working

Hi All,

This is an email to see if someone had the same trouble as me or can share some light.
I have a 69 Serie2 6cyl and when I've started it this weekend the engine was not able to stabilize

The car is actually running on only 3 cylinders (1-2-3) that get hot after few minutes where 4-5-6 stay cold and when I play with cable I can confirm the symptoms

The only cause I can see it that my "123 Ignition" could not fire the 3 cylinders because of some elctronic issues but I do not know how those I built internally so this is just a assuption.

Of course I do not have another distributor so I cannot confirm.

I was wondering if any of you had such a problem before ?

Are the spark plugs on the non working cylinders wet with unburnt fuel?

An easy and convenient way to check the ignition is firing the plugs is to put a timing light pickup onto each plug lead in turn. In your case, you are expecting 4,5 and 6 not to light the strobe.

If you have no timing light, then an electronic ignition can be fooled via the software into moving the timing forward 120' and then if you move the plug leads around by one cylinder also, if it truly is an ignition fault, then the fault ought to move onto the the other three cylinders as the firing order is not 1,2,3,4,5,6 but 1,5,3,6,2,4 (where 1 is closest to the back of the car).

if you are on a two carb engine it may be a fueling issue.

I also wonder whether this is the problem.

You should be able to check and see if you have spark from those 3 cylinders.

If so, try spraying some starter fluid into the front carb and see what happens.

My bad, I forgot to say I have 3 Carbs which made me discard carbs issues.

I am afraid that my experience with 123 has been very discouraging. As "travelling mechanic" on a number of tours I have encountered 123 failure on about 4 occasions. It is fair to say that this was in the early days of 123 i.e. 6 or 7 years ago, and perhaps even more significantly there was never a partial failure of the sort you seem to have : the failure was total . Nevertheless, the fact that this cannot be a failure on just a carburetter seems to point strongly to an ignition fault . If you have your original distributor, I should substitute it for the 123 and see if it cures the problem
