#1 Undercar

Post by Francis » Sat Jan 29, 2011 3:41 pm

Guys,

I need help with this:

I am at this point when I need to do something with the undercoat of the project.

I was told, or I read that the underbody of a Jaguar E-Type Series 2 is supposeed to be painted the same color as the rest of the exterior body.

Is that so?

If so what is used to protect the paint under the car?

Otherwise, what would you recommend applying?

Both my S1 Coupe and S3 OTS were undersealed from new which I thought all E types were. Neither had been previously restored, and under the underseal was some body paint, but mainly primer by the time you get towards the centre of the car. The paint underneath was pretty thin, covering the floors and wheelarches, but really more like overspray from painting the sills and rear wings.

It's little wonder the cars used to rust!

Yep! That's exactly what I tought!

I can't make rimes or reasons of this!

What should I do then? get my paint shop to recreate overspray and then cover it all up with a prickly flat black under carriage spray?

Factory underseal was very rare in the early 1960s. It was, however, a popular dealer addon and is a creation of the devil . I should do what all the reputable restorers ( and indeed modern manufacturers such as BMW) now do, which is to apply Bodyschutz - a semi-flexible sealant - to the areas vulnerable to stone chip such as wheelarches and underparts of sills , front valance , boot floor etc - and then paint the entire shell body colour

That sounds like a plan.

Bodyschutz...

Will this affect originality in a concourse setting?

I have never been interested in concours and therefore have no knowledge of it, but there is probably someone here who could tell you . Personally I think it is extremely unlikely that you would be penalised for it

Here is a link to my photo album on Jaglovers, showing some pics of the underside of my 69 2+2: http://www.jag-lovers.org/v.htm?id=1296343319

I am not the original owner, nor do I know the full history of my car. I was told, and as yet have not had reason to doubt it, that this car is original and unrestored. I believe it was, however, repainted. The paint coverage looks too extensive and consistent for overspray however.

Francis:

Paintable 'bodyschutz' is the way to go. Apply to floorpan and the underside of front and rear wings (fenders), then paint body colour.
JCNA Concours judging must be done from a standing or kneeling position I believe. Go to the JCNA website and download the judging guide for your series of E-Type. Lots of good info.

Cheers,

Bruce
