Anthony, I've heard of people adding a strip of LEDs into the rear number plate light for the reverse lights. Or you could position a strip above the number plate itself. It might be worth you looking at that to give you a neat solution.

Anthony
Marek, who is active on this site, sells a conversion of the rear lights with led reversing lights built in. I have them and they are incredibly bright. Well worth an investment and a proven fitment.

All this talk of rear lights jogged a memory. I bought a project car several years ago and the PO had done the reverse. He fitted S2 lights to a S1 FHC. I have no explanations.

Well, although i don't much like it, I can see the reason for it : the S2 setup is much more visible from the rear than the titchy S1 rear/brake lights

Other than making the s2 and s3 LED "Lotus" lights fifteen years ago, I have also embedded LEDs behind the reflectors for s1 rear lights, but I haven't marketed this. It means the reflectors double up their function, you get two high brightness stop lights which are normally invisible, since the reflector is all you can normally see.

Great idea Marek - you should offer these to Forum members.

Marek, could they not be used as fog lights, increasing the light to the rear if caught out on a gloomy day?

"Fog lights should only be used in the fog, when visibility drops below 100 metres (328 feet) which is roughly the length of a football pitch, this is stated by the Highway Code (rule 226). If while driving in fog your car is involved in an accident and you weren't using your fog lights, it could invalidate your insurance. The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 prohibits the use of front and rear fog lights to dazzle other drivers when visibility is not reduced or when the vehicle is parked. Using fog lights in drizzle and rain is therefore not allowed. You are eligible for a fine from the police if caught."

At least 2 dubious propositions in that quote, David , 1 about insurance being invalid and 1 about its being an offence to use fog lights when there is no fog . The offence is the use to dazzle other road users, not the use in itself

Not my words, hence the quotes - came from the RAC who are supposed to know about these things!

I have Marek's reverse lights (built into the lens, of course) have had them for years now. Best thing I ever did....unbelievable lights ! Marek is a genius !! And you can ditch the old style, ugly , useless original back-up lights !! Looks fantastic !

I beg to disagree with your explanation of the offence. There are 3 prohibited uses of either front or rear fog lamps. The first is as you state (dazzling other road users). The second is other than in conditions of seriously reduced visibility. The third is when parked. You should refer to reg 27 of the 1989 Regulations.christopher storey wrote: ↑Sun Feb 10, 2019 4:59 pmAt least 2 dubious propositions in that quote, David , 1 about insurance being invalid and 1 about its being an offence to use fog lights when there is no fog . So everyone who uses either front or rear fog lamps in clear visibility is committing an offence even if use does not cause "undue dazzle or discomfort."

My E-type gets around this potential regulatory minefield by the simple expedient of having neither front nor rear fog lights

Having read both the regulation - which does not of itself create an offence - and also S 42(1)b of the Road Traffic Act 1988 - which does create an offence, I agree that you are correct . The second - and even more so the third - limbs are particularly stupid, since a vehicle parked in thick fog is very much at risk without rear fog lampsTurboScab wrote: ↑Mon Feb 11, 2019 1:16 pm

I'm sure I saw the Demon Tweeks racing E Types had their rear reflectors replaced by LED units for use as high intensity warning lights. Were these courtesy of Marek?

Not it won't be one of mine. My s1 reflector light looks exactly like a 1963 reflector from the outside. The whole point of the s1 reversing light and the reflector lights is that you can't tell they are there until you use them.
My latest s2/s3 reversing lights now have four rows of white LEDs sitting between five rows of clear red LEDs
kind regards
Marek
