Excellent Simon! You can use the format I adopted for the S1 thread and I am sure Angus will have some input as he has probably seen and dismantled more original S2's than anyone I know.

I'm with Simon regarding the S2, regarding it as a refinement of the S1. The S1 rear lights are rather tiny and toy like IMHO and I much prefer the interior panel, switches, seats etc. of the S2.
My S2 came with the Elan rear lights and straight exhaust, and I rather like them, seeing these lights or the standard S2 as far more manly than the S1's. The only thing I'm not keen on with the standard S2 is the square number plate, so I've benefitted by someone's hard work.
The air intake grill on the S3 does nothing for the aesthetics of a beautiful car and I'm not keen on the splayed out wheel arches.
But it's all down to personal preferences, so those who like their own cars should be very pleased and happy with them, you've got an example of the most beautiful car in the world, but I totally fail to see why someone would take an S2 and spend lots of money changing switches, seats, bonnet, rear lights etc. to make it look like an S1.
I'm glad my budget didn't run to an early S1, as I feel the pleasure for the money spent is very much greater with what I've got.
Had I that much to spare, then I would rather have two S2s, one my present FHC, one a roadster.
Just my two penny worth.

Yes, Jeff, there are quite a few of us who prefer the S2.
It almost seems that the 'purists' have pressurised people into believing their ideas. But not us. 8)

I like my S2. When i got it, there was a rectangular number plate so i actually changed it to a square one !
When i was a teeenager in the 70s thats what an S2 e type looked like so thats how i want it.
Maybe we should start a Series 2 appreciation society ......

There's a shot of an S1 blue FHC with Minilites in the current issue of the Jaguar Journal and I've got lots of pics of my silver S2.FHC with Minilites. They really suit a silver car and even the stainless plinth and chrome rear lamp clamshells look OK as it all blends in.

I have done some mods myself. In my opinion its starting to look a lot better than original.

Have removed bumper, reverse lights and that stainless steel plate.
The rear lights are modified with led on a printboard to be able to mount them closer to body.
And last, series 1 exhaust.

#69 S2 Rear end Makeover

Post by Steve Marshall » Thu Oct 23, 2014 7:44 am

I am fine with the open headlights and big sidelights of the S2, but I just hate that aluminium plate, the reversing lights and the cowhorn exhausts. Maybe because the first three had a logic and purpose whereas the latter just look like a lack of design care.

So I am having had the rear section de-seamed between the overriders, and changed the number plate lights to S1 types mounted on modified over-riders. Reversing lights will be as Elan S2. All easily reversible except the de-seaming, which will be hidden if the standard bumper is reinstated.

I assume you mean the integrated reversing lights from the Elan S4 rather than the S2?

I meant to type the Elan Plus 2, which has the same units (I think) but upside down. I photoshopped this S3 to see what it would look like. If I have got it wrong with the Elan parts please let me know as I am just about to order them.

The baby Elan S4 uses the Jaguar light clusters with integrated reversing lights. The plus 2 ditto.

#73 Series 2 aesthetics

Post by Peter Harrison » Tue Apr 28, 2015 8:59 am

Hi All,
I appreciate from the earlier posts that this will not resonate with everybody but I note that when Angus restores his series 2s, he seems to omit the aluminium plate. The ?trailor-board? effect is removed and evidence of the rear ?tapered effect? is restored. I like it ? but I wouldn?t discard any of the items removed to achieve the slimmed down effect. Regards, PeterH

It's stainless, not alloy.

Removing the stainless finisher on the s2 probably yields an even bigger improvement than removing it from a s3. Here is my car for comparison, with embedded reversing LED lights, which I did back in 2007.

Great work Marek! How (or where) did you get the indicator lenses made?
