They are not big and they are not ugly.

Agreed, it has been changed a bit.

However, the time it took to alter the lenses, license plate filler, rear exhaust sections, square number plate, reversing lights and bumper strip was about 2 hours.

So there.

Jeff - it was of course foolish of me to use a photo of my own car as I'm obviously blinded by my own emotional attachment, so I've been over to XKE Data to get a random shot of a standard S2.

You're quite right. How the womenfolk must scream and parents rush to cover up their little children's eyes when this drives down the street.....

Surely Jaguar missed a trick here and rather than calling the car the 'Series II' they should have called it the 'John Merrick Limited Edition'?

Fat tyres and no side chromes - put a canvas bag over its head, please!

Actually, I think you'll find that we British designed and built the Blackbird. It's just that given the highly classified nature of 'Black Projects' this is something you Americans have never been permitted to know....

After much time consuming and costly research and development, I am now at a stage where I can offer a bespoke Series 2 rear aesthetic upgrade kit.
I went back to the drawing board using old fashioned Jaguar circa late 60s engineering and design principles.
The results speak for themselves.
It is fully reversible and comes complete with instructions.
Despite considerable interest from the likes of Barratts, CMC, XKS Jaguar Heritage and other big names, I have decided to offer it direct to Forum members.

Isn't the real point here that S2 rear ends aren't especially ugly by the standards of the time, but not good enough for an E-Type.

It's just that the front 98% of an E-Type is so goldarn gorgeous that the butt just doesn't live up to the rest of the car. I'll wager that Malcolm Sayer said 'not on my watch' when he saw it.

As Shakespeare said 'There is no beauty that hath not some strangeness in its proportion' - without specifically mentioning the E-Type s2 chrome excresences.

Rather like a "monstrous carbuncle on the face of a much-loved and elegant friend" © Mr C. Wales, Windsor.

I will take some persuading that the body wasn't made to accept a different item, but there was a last-minute change of plan. The Vee recess isn't even in same place as the lampholders.

Hi All Has anyone considered Mk2 Jag taillights to improve the aesthetics of S2 taillights ? There have been various posts on Lotus Elan and MGB taillights but it would appear that the Mk2 lights are similar to S1 in profile and could fit with minor modifications to the Mk2 backplate. Any comments? . Just a thought. Regards Paul

Nice idea, Paul. Can we persuade you to trial fit them both sides getting rid of the chrome (tin!) finish plate at the same time?

I think you'd have to remove the stainless steel plate in the middle to make that work, as the plate gives a square edge along the bottom that the original lights continued.

Hi Geoff The chrome side base plate could easily be cut or ground to shape but as it is looks more attractive than the side view of existing S2 taillights. The beauty is there would be no damage or modifications to the car or original lights should you wish to revert back. Maybe one day . At least I have the Mk2 lights I bought at an auto jumble sale yesterday for approx. £8 the pair !

Hello all
I just cleaned up the back of my S2 and I removed my reversing lights. I ran the reverse wires to the back of my taillights. I would like to modify my taillights by inserting a reversing light fixture into them and by addding a clear lens to my covers for the reverse lights.
Are there any write ups or how to docs on doing this?
Thank you!
Anthony!

You need the rear lights from a Lotus Elan. A straight swap I believe.

Hi Mark. I believe you are correct but I’m hoping to take the cheaper way out by modifying my existing lights. Was hoping there was a how to for inserting a clear lens.

You could always just buy the lens but you would need to buy the reversing lamp bulb holder also.

Dave Bean or RD Enterprises may be a cheaper option in your part of the world.
