#1 where to get the small seals between 2 brake caliper halves

Post by rolando38 » Thu Sep 03, 2015 7:51 pm

here is what they look like, they are not included in the usual brake seal kits, as one is not supposed to separate the 2 halves, but then how the hell can you overhaul them ??

see top right; one is damaged

Hi Roland....done the same as you and separated my calipers....cleaned them up and had them zinc plated but not the inside of the bores, then refaced the mating surfaces...hunted around to find some flat o rings to replace the seals.....just found them in a local hydraulic supplies shop....The type that supplies pipes etc to tractors/ farm machinery. ..just make sure that you locktite the bolts when you rejoin the two half's. .... just for later reference, the dimensions of the seal are:

outer Diameter 0.5 " (12.6 mm)
inner diameter (hole) : 0.3" (7.5 mm)
thickness: 0.06" (1.63 mm)

Don't forget that they are square section. I got mine from John Farrel iirc, from whom I ordered my stainless pistons.

thanks

thery don't appear on their website

https://etypeparts.myshopify.com/collections/brakes

I also found them at Terry's jag, but I would prefer a UK or France provider for shorter delivery time

Try AP racing, or any stockist of their parts. These are common to a huge number of lockheed calipers, referred to variously as "Bridge, Channel, Cross Feed, or Cross Over Seals"

Should be pretty easy to find in the uk.

And when you do find them, if they are less than 1GBP each, get 12 or so... you never know.

You will also find it a LOT easier to fit the pistons, seals and dust boots before you reassemble the halves.

I have been searching for these bridge seals for the past week or so and have spent a number of hours looking at numerous websites. I found they seem to be readily available in the US and only cost cents which is what I would expect. However finding them in the UK is not so easy. Anyway yesterday I had to drop some parts off at a plating shop and I realised I was not far from a company that deals in AP Racing parts among others and so I called in on them. When I mentioned Girling calipers the reply was " ooh no, we only deal with AP and your not supposed to split calipers so we would not be able to get them anyway". They then suggested I try Brakes International which was a couple of miles away. Better result, they knew exactly what they were and the part number but had no stock but would order them from Denmark! As I was leaving one of the guys said try Bigg Red in Worcester, they should have them. So got in the car found the phone number and called them. I was dealt with very efficiently and politely and asked how many I wanted, I said I needed 4, gave card details and address and the guy said he would post them. To my surprise a box appeared at lunch time today containing the 4 seals. A bit more expensive than the US but less than some suppliers I found by quite a margin and they did not charge for postage so I was very pleased. :bouncyyellow:

I recently re built all my calipers
And they came in the seal kits
I don't know why they are not in yours
Very odd
This is the company I got my kits from
E bay item number 402040150933
If you look you can see them in the picture
They do kits for all models
They are very helpful

:yeahthat: +1 for Bigg Red

but Classicar Automotive in Macclesfield do an excellent job of rebuilding your callipers for you, inc. re-plating and stainless steel pistons for around the same as you buying the parts and doing it yourself and you get your own callipers back.

Same Girling calipers as on à Volvo P1800, I order everything from this Swedish firm much cheaper than for a jaguar.

@ UK Muppet
Hello Tony,
Searching the Biggred website for Part No. BRS222106 and all derivatives down to 222106 results in:

"No products were found that matched your criteria"

Regards,

Bill

Hi Bill, I made a search myself with the same results as you, so no answer other than the website is not brilliant. I found it a little troublesome to use.
I can only say calling them did the trick, I just said I wanted bridge seals for Girling calipers and they asked what the size was due to there being 2 sizes. I got them the next day with the part number shown on the bag and invoice. I didn't make it up.
Maybe its something to do with the scare tactic of telling you that you must not split calipers. :scratchheadyellow:
As for getting calipers rebuilt for about the same as buying the parts as Johnetype suggested, I very much doubt that could be achieved, if it was possible they must rebuild them for nothing.
It cost me 70 quid to rebuild my rear calipers, including plating, 4 new pistons (standard not st/st) and new seals and I had the pleasure of doing it myself which helped relieve the lockdown boredom.

The square profile o rings are called "channel seals".

They are a standard sized generic item. I took a sample into my local brake place and they had them on the shelf.
