#1 Series II E type 4.2 Under dash harness connections

Post by M41 » Thu Jan 28, 2016 1:20 pm

I am installing new harnesses in my 71 E type OTS and am uncertain about connections under the drivers side of the dash. I have a wiring diagram but many wires do not connect to the same color coding with snap connectors. I made the mistake of not taking enough pics of that area before I disconnected the old harnesses. Would appreciate any help. Thanks
Marv

Marv : if the original British, Lucas, colour codes have been used, then the wires should almost all correspond with those they connect to. If, however, either the wiring in the car, or the new looms, have used a later colour code , then there are problems and you are going to have to identify what does what .

A guide to what all the original wire codes should have been is here

http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/colourcodes.htm

and a paradoxically rather easier to read one is

http://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/c ... rder_2.pdf

I hope this helps

Chris,

I just opened the autoelectric site that identifies the multicolor coded wires as to their function. That is very helpful and I appreciate your response to my post.

Where you'll run into trouble is with the indicator switch. The wiring diagram does show the correct colour to colour connections.

Where you'll run into trouble is with the indicator switch. The wiring diagram does show the correct colour to colour connections.
I just went through this. The 5-pin connector to the turn signal stalk is:

Harness --- signal stalk
------------------------------------
Purple --- brown (fabric)
Black/red --- light green / blue
Green/red (center wire) --- Green/red
Black/white --- light green / yellow
Black (fabric) --- white/blue (fabric)

If you have any specific questions in this area, this is fresh in my mind and the top is off of my dash.

Bob,

Thanks for the harness signal hookup. That is very helpful. Can you also tell me how your side harness from the rear connects to the dash harness and engine harness in the drivers side foot weld? That is where I am having a problem. If you cannot, I surly understand. thanks

Hello. If I could please revive this thread...
I’m correcting some badly made lighting connections by the previous owner.
He had the front turn signal wires reversed in the bonnet. I corrected them according to the wiring diagram.
The bad news now is that the fronts flash the wrong side (the right flashes when you signal left. The rear left flashes correctly.
I’m presuming this must be something that needs to be corrected in the cockpit.
I had a look at my signal stalk harness and observed that the connections match the colors as Bob described with these exceptions.

There is a purple wire that is just cut on both ends. Not connected.

The black wire coming out of the stalk heads over to the horn button (I presume this is wrong).

The only cloth black wire I could find up there was being used for the radio. And my blue and white wire is connected to a cloth blue and yellow.

Any suggestions appreciated. Is there another place behind the gauge panel that these could be reversed?

Thanks
Anthony

Yes, at the base of the LHS A pillar by the indicator flasher unit. If you have a look at the second photo in post #7 in this thread, it shows the set of bullet connectors you should check as I suspect this is where you'll find your problem.

It is the green red and green white connectors that are the left and right flashers.
If the rears are flashing correctly, but the front is wrong, it is most likely crossed over on the bonnet connector, the 10way block behind the bonnet connector in the bonnet or the feed to the bonnet connector from under the dash.

The bonnet connector should be
Green White (Right) on pin 7
Green Red (Left) on pin 8

If the rears are also flashing wrong, it may be you have them connected the wrong way round on the flasher relay.

Apart from that, following the wires along, all connections should be Green-Red to Green-Red and Green-White to Green-White.

Blue White / Blue yellow are for the headlights. The purple wire you mention should be the horn.

John and Mark. Thanks so much. I finally finished reterminating my rear light connections. Tomorrow I will find where my turn signals are crossed.
