#1 Rev Counter

Post by Simon P » Mon Aug 01, 2016 9:55 am

Question: Are there two types of S2 rev counter? Mine goes round to 6,000 and is red-lined from 5,000 to 6,000, but at the weekend I saw a S2 OTS with an otherwise identical Smith's rev counter - except that it only went round to 5,500 (and red-lined from 5,000 to 5,500).

Simon, can't answer your question, but it's interesting reading through Clausager to look at the different rev counters.
The S1 (3.8) had the included clock and red line starting at 5500. Then with the S1 4.2 the early ones still had the clock but red line starting at 5000 rpm, but on the same page (81) shows the later S2 type of rev counter but with red line at 5500 rpm.
For the S2 we get the gauge you and I have with red line from 5000 rpm.
All gauges go to 6000 rpm.
So is the one you saw from another Jag?
Also why the odd S1.5 gauge red lined at 5500?

Here you go. I took a fairly poor quality photo on my phone. Like you say, maybe it's a 'non E-type' replacement?

Come to think of it, the choke control placard is different from mine too.

The 0 - 5500 ones usually were fitted to saloons, mainly 420 and 420G ( and possibly some late mark X). The saloon ones are usually fairly easy to recognise because they often do not have 3000 at the top centre, with something more like 2750 being at the top. I'm not sure what the one in the picture is originally from

The illuminated labels for the heater and choke controls are shown as from October 1969 and also are seen on the S3.
(Though Clausager shows the clock operated by the car battery and the Britax steering lock both being introduced post my car but I have them.) Learning about some of the anomolies of Jaguar production. Did someone grab the wrong tacho from the parts bin?

I see this post is from three years ago so appologies but I have an interesting rev count that is out-with my shpere of expertise.

I bought what I was told was a early E-Type tacho for my Bentley Special (I know, wrong badge but there you go!) I decided against using it as my engine red-lines at 4,500 and the red line on this dial was 6000 with the reading going up to 6500.

I notice that most e-type rev counters red line at a lower number and therefore wondered if I have accidentally stumbled across something quite rare? It has no clock, a chrome bezal and no other lights (see pic) Could anyone shed light on it?
Thanks
Simon

I've returned rather late to this , but I think the 6500 tacho is possibly from an early 2.8 litre XJ6 which certainly had chrome bezels. I cannot think of any other candidate - the 2.5 Daimler 0 - 6500 was of course 8 cylinders

My rev counter again appears to be reading low. I re-calibrated it a while ago which improved things but . . . Std gearbox and final drive.

I'm sure I've seen on here a table giving revs against speeds through the gears. This would be most helpful for checking, rather than trying to see if the speed in top is right at 3500rpm!! (rather revs are right at ~87mph)

Can anyone point to said table/list/tread please?

Thanks, J

Super. That does it for me Steve, though postimage.org doesn't work for me to copy the image.

I have found in these cases (and when I only see an image link), I can right click on it, copy link location, paste that into Notepad, change .org to .cc, then copy the link into a new tab and this then opens the postimage jpg. . . .

. . . . then I've just found if I right click on your image it gives me the option to save the image which is much easier :bouncyyellow:

I've turned it the right way up and can use the 3.07 data.

Ta very much, Jerry

Thanks for your reply, Chris. Much more likely than a lightweight e-type!

HI,
Bit late to this.
LWE original RVI Rev counters go up to 7000.
