car is running really rough, backfiring, spluttering, losing power. changed ht leads, dizzy cap, leads, new fuel filter still the same. car is with jag specialists (e type) and they have give it a good once over and cleaned the carbs, still the same. They are now doing a compresson test as they suspect a sticky vv as car was not run for two years whilst rebuilding back end, fuel tank was flushed and new filter fitted but they suspect old fuel causing vv stick. I am hoping this is the case otherwise if compression is gone on one cylinder and vv seems ok then its head off and serious dent to bank account, that will please the other half.

the jag mechanic bought in a carb specialist and from what I can work out from what he said was the front carbs do not have an adjustable needle but when a mod kit was fitted it now runs fine, I'm not sure as there was quite a bit of woffle going on and I am none to happy at the final bill which was for welding a new jacking point in and the carb problem plus the MOT (WHICH IT PASSED) £1900 which in my eyes is a hell of a lot for a welding job and carb job. will not use them again but they were highly spoke of.

That is the sort of bill you would get for removing the engine and gearbox and refitting!

Hello Jon,
If the front carburetors didn't have adjustable metering needles, these carburetors must have been swapped with the original equipment during the life of the car. All S3 cars were fitted with Stomberg CD175 carburetors having adjustable metering needles.
It is not the norm that the front carburetors are matched, in fact the carburetors are matched in their mechanical construction, diagonally. That is, the left rear and right front are matched with both having a starting valve assembly (choke unit), whilst the left front and right rear don't. The choke unit is indicated in the third picture included below.
Stomberg carburetors having adjustable metering needles are easily recognized by the relatively plain looking sump plug in the bottom of the float chamber. The extension tube from the main jet draws fuel from inside this plug. The first two pictures below show views of this plug.

To clarify.... they have carried out the following work:
Changed HT leads
Drained and flushed the tank.
Stripped carbs (prior to bringing in a specialist)
Diagnosed problem on carbs
Rebuilt carbs and re-tuned the car
Welded jacking point
Took for MOT
All for 1900?
