#1 Plug for the S3 in Classic Car - Buy one now!!

Post by Lambo911 » Fri May 26, 2017 12:59 pm

Classic Car mag this month is saying to snap up an S3 now before the prices reach the stratosphere....

I sort of see their logic, the S3 is attracting it's own following of younger buyers wanting to get into an Etype and them seeing S3 being a 'better' version of the original.

And I maintain that the V12 version of E is going to become highly sought after when your average car only has 3 cyl's or just batteries.

There was a time when people only wanted series 3 cars (admittedly, roadsters) and you couldn't give a series 1 coupe away.

Things go in cycle. I suppose.

Not quite sure how 'the young' can afford an S3 ! Any good condition S3 is circa £60k . They are not getting cheaper either !

That's exactly why I bought a cheap one. The good ones are already expensive.

I wanted to have one and even if it takes years to get it back into good condition I'm already sitting in it in my garage and dreaming of the day the engine will start for the first time.

Problem is what is cheep and what would you get for your money, cheap is not cheap if you have to spend thousands on it

Hi,

a cheap one was the only possibility for me to get one.

It will be my last "Oldtimer" and I want to work on it for the next years.

For me working on a car is like a therapy after a hard day in the Office (a kind of ZEN of repair).

I have been very much aware that in the end I will spend the same or even more money than buying a "good" one (which might be 75.000€ at the moment).

But where would be the fun of working on it and seeing step by step progress.
My car is not running at the moment but I have decided to "rescue" it from the pre owner (after 36 years of ruining it).

I know that this was not a brilliant idea. But sometimes I just sit in it and dream of the day
when it will rev up for the first time.

I have just finished to overhaul the carburettors and nearly all lighting is back to life.
Small steps for one cat but a great leap forward for me.

And by the way, there is no difference in cost of an engine overhaul if you take it out of a 20K€ or 50K€ car. So why buying the 50K€ car.

I know very well that everybody has to decide for himself what his target is.
Mine is to have a car where I can put my hands on, understand how it works and bring it back on the road one day.
If you just want to drive you have another priority.

Greetings from Germany

Hi Sven
on the same page!
I ve started to rework my S3 4 years ago. Body work is finished. Engine is back on the car
All the front bits have been reworked and all is back in place as wall as the IRS.
I ve for now a brocken schoulder. Cannot do anything.... :-(
My will is to do all by myself. It is longuer but cheaper...
Dont give up for your own car.
Le chemin sera long!...

Must admit I got mine for 20K but that was 7 years ago just before prices started to go up, I suppose in total have spent around 4k in that time but as a ongoing tart up.it was pretty good to start with though

I agree, Sven. When I did my engine and clutch four years ago, I had never done anything internal on a drive train before. During the process, I learned so much more about how my car works and how to trouble shoot problems that I'm now confident to take it on long trips without worries of mechanical problems. I also found that I enjoyed the work immensely and would love to dive into another project car (perhaps an MGTC or a Spitfire), but I just don't have the garage space. My E, however, continues to throw minor problems at me from time to time so that I still get to scratch that itch. To many of us, the garage time is enjoyable just like the road time.
