#1 What's my Coupe worth?

Post by Lambo911 » Thu Aug 31, 2017 2:18 pm

Hi All,

I thinking of selling my car but not sure what it is worth in the current market

I have a 72 UK supplied coupe. It is very original, black with red leather, manual box with wires. I have a heritage certificate showing it is matching numbers. I also have full ownership history and it is on it's original UK registration. I don't have any service history but I do have bits and pieces of history which would indicate that the 65k miles on the clock are correct and the general condition would also support this.

I've had it for 3 years and spent a fair bit of time and money sorting out lots of minor issues like new rear calipers, master cylinder, steering rack etc etc. It has a new set of tyres and inner tubes. I have the original tool kit and jack too.

The car is usable and I drive it every now and again. The engine is fabulous and runs really well. The gearbox could do with a rebuild as it does crunch on 4th to 3rd when hot.

It's had a respray at some point in South Africa and the body is in good shape with no major issues other than the bonnet which is tatty. I do have a perfect original bonnet that just needs painting and fitting which would come with the car.

The interior is all original and everything works with only the headrests letting it down as they need re-padding.

The car needs a repaint to make it nice, a bit of tidying inside and the gearbox sorting. I'd also re-bush the front suspension as there is a clunk somewhere buts that an easy job.

So what is it worth....???

Thanks chrisfell but I find Hagerty prices to be way off what is going on in the real world... I'm not sure you can easily classify a classic as being fair or good or excellent.... a pile of scrap or concours maybe but anywhere between is hard to judge as you have to take into account originality and provenance..

Well, you did ask   . I agree, Hagerty is not terribly reliable, but judging from your description I would think that your car would fairly easily achieve £ 22.5K and with a fair wind might go as far as £30K, but it would have to be a good day to achieve this . The problem is that V12s are nothing like as sought after as the 6 cylinder cars, and this is particularly so for 2+2 bodies rather than open cars . A tatty bonnet does not help, and the gearbox rebuild will be expensive as will a repaint, and it is these factors which are likely to restrict the appeal of the car

As Chris said...you did ask. The Hagerty tool is really the only thing we have to go on without viewing the car. If you want a good approximation then the person doing the appraisal needs to see the car and documentation. Most car clubs have valuation officers and garages with e type expertise may also be able to provide a valuation for insurance purposes. Insurance valuations are usually slightly optimistic so expect a final sale price to be 10% or more below the insurance valuation. Bit of an old chestnut this valuation thing....at the end of the day it is worth what someone will pay for it...search the usual web sites for similar vehicles and see what they are advertised for...who knows whether they sell for the advertised price though...

Prices for usable cars are all north of £30k with UK cars starting from £45k.

The cheapest at the moment is a LHD car with a chevy motor for just under £30k but why on earth would someone want that.

As mentioned you don't know what the cars actually sell for but it's probably within 10 percent if it was a reasonable asking price.

Hi Richard....why dont you turn this around.....whats a nice condition car worth....now deduct cost of a good respray,....gearbox recon.....suspension bushes....bonnet (not sure what your saying about that) ...and that its a project that needs completing, so a rough guide, £45k for the nice car, £10k for the work.......worth £35k
All you need to do is advertise and see where you go......pick a price..if it dosent sell lower the price....
Selling a S3 with bad paint and a crunchy gearbox and clonky suspension will put most buyers off unless its a bargain...or complete the jobs yourself then sell at a premium..... Steve

Hagerty's valuations are based on actual sales, whether auctions, dealers or private, as well as current asking prices. They could said to reflect the real market, rather than just owners aspirations. Just occasionally a rogue figure gets through, but as a guide these valuations are probably a more reasonable an estimate of current values than any other.

Ps...just for intetest a 67 S1 2+2 fair (not saying yours is only fair) Hagerty valustion £16.4k....havent seen one for that price in years

If Hagerty have these values chiseled in stone they may well be unable to offer insurance for alot of cars , for example " one of the best in the world" concours S1 3.8 fhc has a max value of £132k , " one of the best in the world" S3 fhc £67k , that's a tough challenge to find replacement cars at those values .

It's also interesting to see the difference from S1 to S1½ values , good --£30,000 ex--£46,000 con--£46,000 , those headlights seriously ? .

As for Richard's car i agree there is a £10-12K difference with the work done ,

I am very doubtful that you could get bonnet repair, total repaint, and gearbox overhaul done for anything near £12K . I would put the box alone at getting on for £4k including VAT ; you can spend a fortune on repairing a tatty bonnet, certainly of the order of 4k by the time say 50 hours work is involved, and as for paint, these days I doubt that there is any change from £10k plus VAT = 12k for an reasonably good paint job.

Christopher,

Your approximations might be right , but i was refering to the value of the car not the cost of the work .

Hi all, thank you for your comments.

I agree with the comments on Hagerty prices, I just don't think they reflect the real world. According to them my Reliant Scimitar is worth £10k, I'd happily sell it for that.

As for my car just to clarify;

I have a perfect original bonnet in primer that just needs paint and fitting. There would be some resale value in the existing bonnet as it is very repairable.
A gearbox rebuild isn't expensive and a jag 4 speed isn't anything special, it just needs 3rd to 4th syncro which is a tenner from SNG, of course there will be other parts but it would be less than £1000 with me taking it out of the car
I've been quoted £8000 to do a full repaint by a classic jag specialist which included painting and fitting the afore mentioned replacement bonnet.

I did go through the numbers and it was cost effective to make the investment and then sell it but I'm not sure I have the stamina to go through a restoration

Same miles and exterior colour as mine so I was interested to see what this went for.

Auction commission fees make quite a difference, another £5k on a £34k hammer price. The car looks tidy but hard to tell from the pictures and auction sites tend to gloss over the bad points. This ones an auto on steel wheels which won't help the value.

Did you see the car mgcjag?

In a way my son has the same question of whats it worth but he has sold his ser 2 and wants a ser 3
he has found one in northern Ireland and we went over to look and give it a good inspection and this is what we found Orig RHD MANUAL COUPE ON WIRES WITH NEWISH TYRES
Bodywork - No Rust new sill fitted inner and outer, new floorpans, paintwork is good, chrome well worn but no rust just been polished to death over the years, looks nice with the coppery patina

engine - really strong good compression on all 12 cylinders runs nice, no faults with gearbox and clutch, all electrics working

interior - black leather, in better condition that the whats it worth car, very orig

has had a colour change was purple now signal red

loads of history, 78,000 miles new

Now my son has put a deposit on it as the owner is now in Australia and the asking price was £45000 which seems a lot but after looking at 7 differentt ser 3 for sale seems like a reasonable amount as all the others were 30 to 40k but all needed serious and expensive work (one looked superb but on finer inspection was covered in filler and really had rust problems
1974 ser 3

It's been a while but just to let you know I sold it for £35k which I was happy with and the buyer is happy too. His plan is to get a repaint and whilst the engine is out to sort out the gearbox.

I do miss not having it although I don't miss the agro it caused me which silly issues.

Now looking for an early 3.8 fixed head..... :wow:
