#1 Gritted roads!!!!

Post by Ikebaddog » Mon Nov 20, 2017 7:51 am

Took the E-type out for a 150 mile round trip of some of the best roads in Kent and East Sussex yesterday, the sun was out, took some great photo’s. The roads had been gritted, so I spent 15 minutes spraying hot soapy water under the car and around suspension components, can’t not drive the car on days like that!!!

Mine would have been out over the weekend as well, but for the highways agency gritting the major roads. I’m not so worried about salt damaging the brightwork of the playing. I’m worried that salt will unzip bodypanels. My car hasn’t had a proper restoration. I suspect much of the paint hides body filler and riveted patches.

Kent County Council do seem particularly keen to salt the roads. I mean its not been necessary at all but as you say they have been out and all the roads have the faint hint of pink in the ditches and white in the track lines. I am just in the process of replacing zinc fixings around the front end as they have corroded in less than two years and it only got wet once!

Aye. We've got much smarter about protecting our pride & joys' bodywork with waxoyl and the like, but still road salt can strip the finish off a plated part faster than you can say 'Fetch me a bucket and sponge'.

Anybody got any recommendations for protecting zinc plated parts? sometimes the plating doesn't last 12 months. Then goes white and soon the rust takes hold. Dinitrol Corroheat? Clear lacquer? GT85 spray? Gtechniq crystal lacquer?

Hi Jeremy......the Corroheat is a very good product.....even used it on front and rear calipers.....i assume that all you zinc plated items were passivated for extra protection.......however i dont use my car in salted roads .....Steve
