#1 FUEL PUMP XKE 1971

Post by TiltyV12 » Sun Nov 26, 2017 12:37 pm

The fuel pump on my newly imported e type is in need of replacement.
The O.E replacement from local jaguar spares suppliers is expensive.
The one fitted is not an original and can be replaced at a fraction of cost.
Any advice please ? Many Thanks.

Unless you go for invisible originality I would recommend Huco #133000. This is a low pressure ( as opposed to EFI high pressure) fuel pump suitable to be mounted near the tank (as opposed to near the engine).

I'm using this fuel pump in my 7.2L Jensen Interceptor to supply fuel to the surge tank (which has the EFI pump).

Unless the pump is sucking air (which happens when the tank is below 1/4 and cornering), the pump is completely inaudible.
Best Regards

Hi . Use any available 2 to 4 lbs fuel pump available in any auto store. Should not cost more then $40.00

I might suggest an AIRTEX pump # E8016S. Been using one for years, with no problems. Get it on line, if you don't mind the shipping cost. I even carry a spare in the trunk down with the spare tire, but have not needed it yet.

Hi,

I bought an electronic SU (like original) one from Burlen.
Price seems reasonable to me.
Also the "mechanical" one is available there.

Best regards

Hi Guys , Thanks for all your replies to my message with regard to fuel pump.
How important is the PSI and flow rate ? I have found one on e-bay for £29.95.
The PSI IS 6 and a flow rate of 40 gallons per hour , is this OK ? Thanks :helpsign: :helpsign:

The specification for the pump is on the Burlen website.

It needs to flow enough fuel to keep the float bowls full at ~6000rpm.
Excess fuel simply flows back to the tank as once the float bowls are full, they are cut-off by a valve controlled by the floats, which is the norm as below max rpm, less fuel is being used than the pump is capable of flowing.

Excessive pressure is not needed or desirable. The left hand side of the plumbing in the engine bay has a non-return valve to maintain correct pressure for the carburettors.

kind regards
Marek

Hi...welcom to the forum.....whats your name....please try to put it in the signature area with you car model.....thats part of the problem with useing non standar parts....you then have to put in the work to find out if they are suitable......pressure, flow rate ect.......you are aware that the V12 uses a dual Su pump set up.....with an aftermarket cheaper pump you may then need a pressure regulator......so more cost..........Steve

Hello all......SU pump, $342.95. 3 to 5 pound fuel pump at any auto store, $30 to $40.00. No need for a regulator. Works great...cheap and reliable fix. Try it !

If you want a cheap solution then why donˋt you repair your pump.
New points and diaphragm and thats it.

I do not recall saying I was seeking a cheap solution. I found a pump that is far more reliable then the 70 year old design of the SU double pump for the V12. That was then...this is now. My fix happens to work as well, easy to obtain, easy to install, and happens to be considerably cheaper. In addition, as I mentioned, I keep a spare down in the tire well. If my pump should fail while on a trip, which it has never done, replacement is installed by me in 15 minutes. Are you suggesting I rebuild the SU pump on the side of the road by dis-assembling, repair the points, re-assemble, and install in the car ?? Hour and a half? Two hours ?? Cheap? When did I say I was looking for a cheap solution ??

Well it looks like I DID give a cheaper solution!! Or are you suggesting he look for a cheap example of the old SU lump ? Perhaps you are an owner who insists that the E must be kept 'dead on' original. Of course if you are, I wonder if your using modern brakes, modern tires, modern a/c gas, modern mechanical oil gauge, modern paint in a re-spray, etc. Yea , keep it original...oh brother ! The SU pump is a dinosaur, and unless all you do is show the car, why keep it ? So some judge can stick his nose in the trunk, rip open the side panel, and see the old piece of junk , and give you a blue ribbon ?? The car is meant to be driven, and if you can make it safer, more reliable, it should be done. This is 50 years of Jaguar ownership talking...several models, including a Series 3 for 44 years. I come to these forums to help, based on years of knowledge and experience. I get a kick out of helping other Series 3 owners.

Hi Guys , many thanks for all your replies to my messages.
I really appreciate all your help as a new member and owner.
I am not great technically so all advice is welcome to me.
The car arrived with a non standard O.E pump from USA.
The non standard pump was not working on arrival to UK.
I wanted to know if I was doing the right thing on car.
I saved over £225 on original specification fuel pump.
I have fitted new pump from Bad Boy Classics on E-Bay.
Car now starting all OK but no test drive as need MOT.
I will update you once i have road tested E type.

Regards Brain Tilt.

:yeahthat:

Steve is a very helpful person. He has advised many of us over the years in an invaluable way.
He has lots of Jaguar and classic car experience who doesn't advocate originality for the sake of concours judges, but helps find solutions whether in using and sourcing OE parts or sensible modern upgrades.

JJC . Perhaps I can point out a practical difficulty about just putting a generic pump on a car with either Strombergs or SUs, and that is that both of these carburetters are designed to operate with an input pressure which is no greater than that required to counteract the g force imposed by acceleration and still provide flow. On a vehicle with the E's rate of acceleration , this is no more than about 2.5 to 3 lbs/sq.inch, typically IIRC 2.7. If you impose on the needle valves a pressure much greater than this e.g. 6 lbs, sooner or later you will experience flooding of one or more carburetters, with the inevitable concomitants of poor idling, stalling, poor hot starting, bore washing , and in an extreme case fire . Excess pressure is to be avoided for these reasons where possible
