#1 Steel wheels for '73 SIII V12, four-speed

Post by Raferx » Tue Apr 10, 2018 8:40 pm

Hi all,
Brand new to the forum, so please be gentle with me.
Helping a family friend with a number of SIII, V12, four-speed repairs, and maintenance, one of which is getting a second set of tires, and wheels for the car.

I've found this site for the wheel specs:

https://www.wheel-size.com/size/jaguar/e-type/1973/

And was hoping to get one set of wheels from any of these sources:

https://pmctire.com/en/wheels/rssw/stee ... -2-71.tire

https://pmctire.com/en/wheels/ion-alloy ... t-6-4.tire

https://pmctire.com/en/wheels/rssw/stee ... ort-6.tire

https://www.wheelvintiques.com/15x7-ral ... -2-bs.html

Could anyone confirm if any of these wheels will fit the SIII, V12, four-speed?

Many, many thanks in advance.

Cheers,

–R

Hi there, I presume that the Series 3 in question has bolt on wheels, and not splined hubs for wire wheels. The wheel sizes that came up in your research are correct but need explanation. Standard are the 15” x 6”. Please check with MWS on the offset. They supply wire wheels, and is a UK company, but their recommendation on sizing will be correct. The alternative with wider wheels above 6” won’t fit without modification to the rear arches. The wheels you suggested would not seem appropriate for an E-type.

Hi Barry,

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.
Yes, bolt-on hubs, not splined.
I'll contact MWS per your suggestion.
If 15x6 fit without modification, then that's great.

Cheers

The standard painted wheels for the series 3 are exactly the same as any steel wheel from a Jaguar XJ6/12 - so if you want the basic grey painted wheels go to a wrecker and get a set of XJ wheels.

The E -type wheel was the same and came with the standard hubcap but had stainless wheel rings.

A chrome version of the basic wheel with a different hubcap trim was available as an option as were wire wheels on a splined hub.

There is nothing special about the basic wheels - same as XJ.

Hi Garry,

Thanks for the input, I hear what you're saying, and the local Jaguar mech/specialist/restorer we've been working closely with said the same.

But was hoping for more of a "D-Type" wheel look, without the price, hence the steel wheel links for sizing.

In that case just get a basic wheel, paint it the right colour grey and not use a hubcap or wheel ring and put on a bolt on three eared spinner on the wheel - I think there was a recent thread (within a couple of weeks) on this very subject for a series 2 steel wheel. It has links to where to buy the spinner.
