Hi all.... I'm getting ready to change the Fluid in my Auto.Box.... I've drained the fluid by undoing the BIG NUT where the Dip Stick is housed.... but to my surprise only about 3 to 4 litres drained out? and I belive the system takes 9 litres.... (is that correct?).... I'm going to take the Gear Box Sump off to clean and check a few things. And change the Gear Box Filter.... is there anything I should be checking or looking at whilst I'm under there? Cheers.... Des.

Most of the rest of the fluid will be in the torque converter.

Sorry cannot help with that.

In my Range Rover you would do a megaflush or just change the fluid a few times in quick succession but it has a drain and fill hole so easy to do.

On other cars I have seen where they have drilled a hole in the torque converter case and basically made a small drain plug to drain the torque converter but I assume it would need to be rebalanced - not really something I would consider or recommend.

Surely there must be someone from the forum brains trust who can advise on this. Though I suspect that the recommended fluid change interval takes into account fluid remaining in the TC.

All I can think of really is to change it a couple of times or suck out from the dipstick tube a couple of litres every so often and replace it so you get most of the fluid changed.

From experience with the ZF 5HP24 box from my XJ8, to get rid of all the ultrafine debris you have to dismantle the gearbox, clean it manually (and overhaul it in due course) and get a new torque converter and oil cooler. You cant really clean the converter without cutting it open. In case the gearbox had an internal damage, a new/ remanufactured converter (approx 300.-) is compulsory

Wow - he only needs to do a transmission fluid change not a full rebuild

Sorry for shocking you; if your box shifts smoothly withing correct speed limits, and the old oil is not contaminated, a standard oil change will of course perfectly do

Dear forum colleagues,
I totally agree.

If the transmission has no problems I would just perform the normal oil change and also change the filter.
When you remove the oil pan you can see if there is some debris.
If everything is normal just clean it anf fill up new oil.

Changing several times is much too expensive. It will take
up to 10 times!

best regards
