US spec Bonnet
#1 US spec Bonnet
Having never explored behind the impact bumpers can someone tell me please whether a US spec bonnet can be converted without major works to a UK spec. That is can the large bumpers be removed, I understand about the side wing lights. Also same question for the rear bumpers please? thanks Andrew

Assuming it will be re-painted at one point, yes it can work, without to much fuss. Also, before the respray, remove the dopey side marker lights. Much cleaner look.

From memory, the main "box" for the rear bumpers is bolted in, but the body has a spot welded plate running across the bottom of it which would have to be ground off. The three part US bumpers attach to each other with flanges which are at 90' to the UK coupling flanges and if you look very carefully, you'll see that the overriders fitted onto the US to UK spec will be about 1inch difference in the location relative to UK rear bumpers because of those flanges.
At the front, the two holes for the 1974 crash bumpers will have to be filled in in the same way as the sidelights are and the headlight diaphragms will have gaps in them where those passed through to the picture frame.
On the picture frame, the gas strut will connect about 1 inch vertically diferent to accommodate the RH crash bar.
The US front bumpers similarly attach with different flanges as at the back, i.e. the vertical/horizontal swap of flanges means you can't mix and match.
The pre-1974 car won't have half of this fitted.
David Lacey's wenbsite used to have nice pictures of the front bumpers.
kind regards
Marek

thank you guys. I suppose the next question is how much work it will be to convert the rest of the car to RHD vs LHD vs a series One which I have done. Everything with a series 3 is more work me thinks!

As almost everyone else, I found the US federal front bumpers on my 74 hideous.
The rear one as well, but at the same time also accepting the fact that they do provide some protection.
In the attached pictures you can see what I did to solve my bumper issues.
I also welded up the holes from the side marker light and incorporated yellow and red LEDs in the front and rear indicator lenses respectively.

Nice work. And as you say a whole lot better than the federal spec bumpers.
Moving on, can anyone tell me what is involved with a LHD to RHD conversion please. ?

Lots of information in the Forum KB. Mike Cassidy wrote a good series of articles on the subject.
