Hi Ole.
Thanks for the reply.
My update is actually exactly along the lines of what you’ve said:
I’ve just bought an aluminium compressor as it was cheaper than getting my original one rebuilt.
Do you notice any benefits other than the obvious weight saving over the original?
Thanks again,
Hilton.

Hi Hilton,
I have no comparison and can say that the old style heavy iron compressor does work as expected. Produces lots of cold air. Never tried the aluminium version.

Hi Ole,
Thanks and sorry for my misunderstanding as I didn’t read your post properly and thought you’d used an ally compressor.
Glad your original one works well!

Will post up my impressions of my lightweight one when I finally get the funds to get the system rebuilt.

Til then, thanks for all the help.

Cheers, Hilton

Re RHD AC, this RHD (converted from LHD) is for sale in Australia but retains the original LHD AC kit.
https://www.carsales.com.au/private/det ... ?Cr=8
. Anywhere near you Garry?

The only visible concession, apart from the fan intrusion in the footwell issue, appears to be that the ignition lock has been left in the LHD position i.e. to the right of the steering column with the loss of parcel shelf space. I am suprised that the steering column passes over the evaporator housing above the fan.

If it was this easy - and there is probably more to this conversion than meets the eye - why would Jaguar have paid Delaney Galley for tooling for a mirror image version of the evaporator for what was a relatively small RHD market for AC?

No this car is a long way from me - as you indicated this is still the left hand drive system where the one Holeshot has in his car is a RHD system that I have not seen before.

I agree that there was no real reason why RHD cars could not have had AC - numbers would have made it worthwhile.

On this car - a left hooker converted to RHD - not popular at all - if a Mustang or a Corvette still LHD would be OK but a brit car in Aust needs to be original RHD to get best price - with respect to the asking price, we have a saying " tell him he is dreamin".

Best to take back to the US and convert back to LHD and sell there.

Hello from Seville,
if You are not totally concerned about orignality, have alook at www.retroair in the states. They offer aftermarket systems at a reasonable price. Otherwise You will have to pay Sng`s price. Another option could be a modern compresor from FourSeasons, they still make the type of GM A6 compresor, Jaguar installed.
best Regards
Helge

What a strange first post - in a three year old thread.

in which case please add some value to the thread rather than vent your personal feelings. The OP was asking about fitting and using a/c and your response was without merit.

That's a bit unkind! Give them a chance to explain themselves. Not everybody understands the forum protocol straight off.

Have some tolerance, please.

Hello Garry,
Seeing as this old Thread has been revived to some extent and harking back to the comments relating to LHD/RHD air conditioning, Jaguar only supplied, in quantity, the air conditioning units seen commonly in LHD cars. There is only one form listed in the factory parts catalogue and only one part number.

I would not have thought it possible to have the unit seen in LHD cars fitted as is to a RHD car, but it seems that it is. The air conditioning unit set up shown in Hilton's car, certainly looks like a mirror image of that for LHD cars. That is the only one I've ever seen in all the years I've been working on S3 cars and consider it would be a one off.

The LHD to RHD conversion car shown in one of the earlier Posts, were the ignition switch has been left on the RHS, would have issues with the plastic housing for the trafficator, fitting the under side contour of the dash panel.

Best regards,

Bill

I don't think it's unkind at all if you read his first post. And it's not about forum protocol, just normal good manners. Especially aggressive for a first post, so in my view this isn't a real "new member" anyway. Joins a brand new forum, no introduction, and just complains?

Hi Bill - yes there are clearly issues which may or may not be able to worked through.

We can chat further on this later when Covid lockdowns end. Still no Covid in the ACT for about 400 dyas yet good ole Victoria blocks me from going there.

Cheers

Garry

My God, I'm so tired of such a thing as my air conditioner does not work well, maybe I should call specialists who can clean it for me?
Maybe he just made an error in clicking this Forum in his Favourites List and missed the "H" of air.

Hello guys.
I wanted to resurrect this thread after a long time off and dealing with family matters.
Hopefully soon I’ll have cured the cashflow problem, get the car back on the road and make it a more reliable, practical runner that I’ll be using more often.

So just in advance of this, I want to address the AC problem I have as I hate things being there and not working, plus it will be nice to have a cooler driving environment.

I want to get all the AC components and have them checked/serviced or reconditioned so I’m looking for advice on realistically what I can do myself to save cash (and also gain satisfaction!) and where I should take things to experts.
As stated in my previous posts, the original compressor has
seized. I did buy an aluminium replacement but sent it back only because I knew I wouldn’t be able to sort things quickly and needed the money back. Oh well....
So, The status at the moment is that all components of the system are present and in place. There is a leak at the condenser which is most likely at the pipe joint seals where the clowns who did some cosmetic work disconnected them.
The compressor is seized.
I think it would be wise to check the evaporator although it did work in the time I’ve had it but the fan only worked on the first 2 settings and wafted air around rather pathetically so would be good to sort this out.
All pipe work is original and presumably used with R12. Will I need to change all these plus their fittings to use modern 134a?

So can anyone recommend who could check/recondition the Condenser, Evaporator, Compressor? Should I remove the pipe work to check all clean and healthy or do I need to make up fresh pipes with modern joints/unions etc.
I live in SE London but of course, can send items by courier.

Forgive any dumb questions as I’m trying to learn so your patience is hugely appreciated.

Thanks and all the best.

Cheers, Hilton
