#1 Removal of Distribtor on V12 Motor

Post by panamacarrera » Fri Nov 02, 2018 2:49 pm

Hi all

I'm struggling to get the distributor off my motor. I have the SNG Barratt electronic ignition. I cannot get the rotor arm off and cannot get any purchase with an Allen key on the screws through the clear plastic cover.

Is it normal on this system that the rotor arm won't come off?

Any suggestions how to get distributor off greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Nigel

Hi Nigel,
The rotor arm can be tight, especially if its not been off for a while but if you keep working at it it should eventually just pull straight off.

How are you doing with your distributor removal, Nigel?

Thanks for your replies.

With Adrian`s feedback, a screwdriver and a little DW40 I've been able to prise the rotor arm off.

Still no further with the dizzie though. Metric 5mm seems to be the size that fits best but I have mislaid my imperial set of Allen keys whilst the garage is being insulated so haven't yet tried them.

For now I'm concentrating on the garage, once that's done I'll return to the rebuild in the warm.

Thanks again.

Nigel - I don't have access to my 72 Series III so I stand to be corrected, BUT I have pretty sure the Allen head screws/bolts are SAE.

Guys, thanks for all your replies.

The engine had been stretching my experience and patience for almost twelve months and the thought that I had bitten off more than I could chew was a fairly frequent cause of sleepless nights. Finally I have given up and I have taken the engine to Nigel Boycott in Leicestershire for a professional rebuild.

Thanks again for your input.

Nigel: Take two plastic tie-wraps, and make two equal size loops. Place one loop on one side of the rotor, and the other loop on the other side of the rotor. Now pull gently, but firmly with what is now equal force on the rotor. Work it slowly, and off it will come. No worries.
