#1 Silencers

Post by Bernie2015 » Sun Mar 03, 2019 9:44 am

I bought 2 of these (see photo)from SNG and tried to fit them yesterday to my 1973 Series 3. They will only fit on one way due to the positioning of the inlet/outlet on the silencer. it seems that the inlet and outlet parts on the silencer have been fitted the wrong way around or the exhaust pipes are incorrect on my car. Does anyone know what outside diameter of the ends of the silencer should be? I have the front measured at 51mm O/D and the rear at 54mm O/D. They would fit my exhaust perfectly if i reversed the silencer but for reasons explained its not possible. Is this a manufacturing fault otr wrong connecting pipes on the car? Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Bernie -Limited access but just had a quick check under my car which has a st st system of unknown origin fitted so no guarantee that everything is to original dimensions.
OD of inlet pipes at entry to the silencers is 2.0" (ie ID of silencer inlet) and distance between centres of the two silencer inletss 9 1/2". OD of outlet pipes at silencer exit points is 1 7/8" (ie ID of silencer outlet) and distance between centres of approx 6".

Hope this helps rather than confuses,
Bob

Hi,

I would ask SNG if those parts can only be used in combination with the stainless steel pipes.
I have a complete Bell system from SNG in my garage but still wrapped.
If you need support I could measure the parts for you.

Thanks Sven I would be realy interested to know the diameter of the inlet and outlets on your new silencer it would then tell me if there is a manufacturing fault

The larger pipe is the inlet (front) which allows the link pipe to slot inside the silencer.

The smaller pipe (rear) should have the outside dia the same as the inside dia of the front assuming they have used the same tube, one end is expanded.
Hope this helps. :Scotland:

Hi Bernie,
I just checked my set.
The front pipes have an outside diameter of 51mm and fit into the silencer without any effort.

I think you can use the silencers only with the Bell pipes.

Might have to go down that route or perhaps buy the whole kit if these silencers are not designed to fit to the original pipes on the car

Thank you there was no need for that - I have a dialogue going with them already. From the info gleaned above it seems the inlet and outlet on the silencer may have been fitted incorrectly. Thanks for the input all - I will let you know how it turns out.

Ive just had another look at the exhaust system and it looks old enough to be original. Does anyone happen to know what the outside diameter of original pipes on the Series 3 exhaust system were or where I could find this info? ie the ones that go into the front of the silencers and also the outside diameter of the ones that go out of the back of the silencers?

Hi Bernie,
I have an old system in my shed that I believe to be as per original.
The OD of the pipe before the silencer is 2 inches and the OD of the pipe after the silencer is 1 3/4 inches. These are the exhaust pipe outside diameters, not the silencer spigots.
Cheers,
Adrian

Hi Adrian,
I've been a very long time Jaguar owner/enthusiast but have only recently joined the E type club after buying a 1974 series 3 OTS. As a 'newbie' and not wanting inadvertently to do anything on the forum that isn't proper or highjacking the post, I noticed you mentioning you have an old system. I'm looking for a complete serviceable system including the 4 pipe fantail if possible (with or without front downpipes) and wondered if yours is such, and if so would you consider selling it?
Cheers, Les

Hi Bernie,

I had the same problem with my silencers around 3 years ago, mine went back to bell to be corrected.

Bell must be aware of the problem. I spoke to Tom and they arranged for a courier to collect.

Good luck, I hope you get it fixed!

Regards,
Allan.

Thats interesting Allen was it the same problem? When we position them in line with the existing inlet and outlet pipes they wont sit together as they are too close.
