#1 AC Compressor- Anyone have this happen?

Post by Greensand73 » Sat May 25, 2019 10:46 am

Turned on my AC today, and you can see in the pictures bits of the rubber were wearing out. Any idea what is causing this and what is the fix? Sandy

You have a pulley alignment problem.

Thank you. Is there a simple way to diagnose if the engine mount is sagging or the pulley is out of alignment?

Hi Sandy......if mounts are sagging then things will start to touch where the shouldnt like if that pulley is touching front frame.....if pulleys arnt aligned the belts wont run straight...its just a visual inspection..Steve

As all the pulleys are mounted in one way or another to the engine I can't see it being engine mounts. The debris on the frame comes from the top pulley rubbing against one side of the belt.

One for Marek I think as he knows more about the S3 than most.

Have you observed the engine and the compressor when it is running? Looks to me as if the compressor has an issue and the belt is having trouble turning it and the belt is slipping on the compressor pulley and the belt is shedding rubber accordingly.

I would remove the belt and check the movement of the compressor with the clutch engaged and disengaged - maybe there is a tight/failing bearing in the compressor.

The very front part of the compressor is rubber (possibly a damper) in the 2nd photo you can see it breaking up..also the poster says the rubber is wearing out.....it must be rubbing on something.....Steve

Could be your compressor starting to seize up, causing the belt to slip. Happened to my Chevy bus. Made one hell of a noise as well.
If this is a new phenomenon, what would cause a sudden miss-alignment of the pulleys ?

Apologize for not getting back. The issue was the AC compressor needs to be replaced

I knew it was the compressor. For some reason, the compressor first breaks down on many machines as a part of an air conditioner. I don't know what this is due to, most likely with the low build quality and insufficient quality parts manufactured for cars. You won't believe it, and I once had to change two compressors: a car air conditioner and a home one. I was shocked by the prices then. The repair specialists told me to do an aircon chemical overhaul, but I didn't believe that it could help, be honest. But after I did it, everything began to work much better, it's all strange, to be honest!

It depends.
Mileage, conditions where you drive in terms of dust, pollen, bugs ....
But more important, what part of the AC are you thinking about ?
I was referring to the condenser and evaporator.
