#1 Stromberg Temperature Compensators

In the past I have managed to tune my car however this is proving difficult this year. I suspect the temperature compensators on the four strombergs and would like to take these out of the equation. In order to make these inoperative I see some posts about screwing the internal nut hard tight to ensure the valve stays closed. However isn't the normal running position with the plug out as opposed to in? if so how should this be set?
All advice greatly appreciated.

Why not just set them equal? Its quite easy (once removed). I dumped mine in 30ºC water and set them all to be open a fraction at this temp. Then tune the carbs once everything is nice and warm (with bonnet closed).

I took the compensators out of the equation by placing a "blanking" gasket under them. No air flow.
Addressed my high-idle-when-hot problem to a large extent. (Rest of the problem was the sticky bushing at the firewall end of the throttle shaft.)
