#1 Rebuilding lsd.

Post by Fspp369 » Sat Nov 14, 2020 2:11 pm

Hello all,
I’ve noticed a little noise developing from the diff of my S3
It’s a 2.88 lsd.
Does anyone have any observations with regard to companies to recondition the Diff?
I would like to get it done whilst I tackle all of the other bits in the IRS that could have a refurb whilst its out, inc a new H B mechanism to activate the outboard brakes that work at the moment, but the system is a bit clumsy.
Pete.

I take it you've checked and or changed the oil?
My previous 3.07 was starting to make a slight noise before I went to 2.88. It was low on oil so I gave it a fresh change and all was good from then on, no noises etc right up till I swapped it out a few years later. Just a thought. Good luck

The LSD in my Corvette has to have an LSD additive mixed with the oil. I'm not sure if the Jag diff is the same? Having said that, I know that there is LSD specific oil available which I assume already has an additive mixed in? The Vette diff is in good order, but does creak quite a bit as you pull away particularly when very hot. You can alleviate this creaking by driving the car in a few tight figure of eight's in a car park. If you decide to drive down rebuild avenue, Alan Slawson would be the house that would call at. Very nice guy.

Yes a Jag LSD needs an addative or oil that already contains it...Steve

Thanks to all so far.
Yes the diff does indeed need and has a specific oil for lsd’s , in fact it’s the same oil that goes into the diff of my XKRS.
Suggestions so far have included quite a few people, but no one appears twice, so to speak. I was very tempted to use the guys at the “Jag Spares” day at Malvern last year, but didn’t eventually, not sure why not :scratchheadyellow:
BTW the noise is a quiet.. burrbipurr whine sing zing noise, at around 30-50 mph.....I’m sure that explained things really well......

Sorry to be soooo pedantic but suggestions don't always have to revolve solely around this site.
Perhaps it should have read some thing like…”given to me so far”…inc JEC..JDC..RREC…SOC…MAC..etc. :drinkingcheers:

If someone doesn’t like the advice on here then maybe they should go to those other sites and not ask us?

There's no need to be so touchy. Peter is perfectly entitled to do his own research and make his own decisions.

Yes, Alan Slawson does a great job, he rebuilt my final drive, but that doesn't mean that there aren't other people out there equally capable of doing a great job. The limited mileage that most of our cars do means we'll probably never find out how good they are.

Yes, this forum is a great resource for all of us but there's no need to be so precious about it.

So I’m getting on with rebuilding my IRS after Alan Slawson changed the diff ratio.
I’ve got the diff in place on the newly powder coated frame and have just finished getting the wishbones into situ.

Whilst doing this it struck me that the bearing arrangement for the wishbones is complicated and fiddly to refit (even using the copper tube method) whilst the bearing surfaces for the lower shock absorbers couldn’t be simpler. This is not a bearing at all, just a steel bar in a tube.
The wishbone fitting seems unnecessarily complex whilst the shock end is too basic.

Just my thoughts

Hi Peter,

I see you are in Coventry, I had my diff rebuilt by Dana Transmissions in Witton, Birmingham which is not far off the M6. Dana acquired the original GKN transmission business some years ago and were operating a reconditioning service, however this was about 10 years ago. Perhaps worth a phone call.

Regards,

Kevin

If you only get a subtle noise between 30-50 mph and are basing your decision to rebuild this very durable assembly on that criterion alone, my advice - one Peter to another, would be to turn the radio up.

I suppose an even better bit of advice would be to ignore my advice!

Thank you Peter, however I’m going to go for it, as an owner of a RR Phantom III I’m used to silence, agreed not possible in mass produced 1970’s cars, but one can try.
Watch this space, happy new year.

You’d love in America. Over here they stop traffic to give you right of way. You see lots of country roads with signs and barriers for RR Crossing, or ‘RR Xing’.

Rumour has it if you don’t genuflect and doff your cap as the local robber baron drives over your toes, his henchmen assign you to a week’s dishwashing in the scullery.
