My nomination for the hardest task: renewing the exhaust manifold seal rings (C.18405/1 > EBC9388). Old one's fused into place. Exhaust so it is impervious to heat. Hacksaw, chisels and files. All that white stuff I guess is asbestos? One down 3 to go ...

It's probably just that white paste/gum that is used on exhaust manifold gaskets. You could have added some more and just sealed it up again.

There is in fact no need to ever separate the manifolds from the downpipe anyway. You can leave all three pieces connected until the fateful day when one of the manifolds cracks and needs replacing.

That'll be way higher up the list of jobs you don't ever want to do again....

Yep, a definitive “not broke don’t fix”. But I’ve started, so will persevere. There is a lot of white stuff, internal as well as external …

The reason for pulling it all apart, pretty it up and insulate with a few coats of ceramic paint, VHF Flameproof, they do a very realistic cast iron ….
Would be good not to need heat shields, although I am rather skeptical about paint’s ability to insulate, whatever its constituents and despite all the claims.

And then you should do the same on the exhaust manifold side....

Couldn't you just slice a chunk out with a junior hacksaw and peel off?

I'm amazed you managed to separate the down pipe from manifold. This is what we had to do to get the down pipes off, I just took it off the shop coffee table where it sits as a monument to the task of brute force it took to get it out. It still has your mate the sealing ring on after all that beating up too.

We often wondered if this is why you see the cars for sale that boast a stainless exhaust usually have the original down pipes, or maybe we are a bit naff at this perhaps.....

Ouch, all my complaining, seems I had it easy. Came apart easy(ish) I think because the seal rings split open, leaving the tops fused into the manifolds and the bottoms fused into the downpipes. Hacksawing off a slice and peeling was basically what we did, although hacksaw teeth melted away almost immediately and the peeling was with (large) hammer and chisel, with angle grinder to sharpen and quench harden the chisel every couple of minutes. All behind me now …

Now watch the studs snap when you put is all together - I assume new studs and nuts.

Yeah, use those stainless studs with anti-seize. And speaking of those studs, our 71 coupe has 3/8" UNF fine, whereas the 72 OTS has a right weird coarse thread. That seemed strange.

I seem to remember the nuts have a piece of wire in them that is sacrificial when you try to undo them.

Ok, thx, stainless downpipe studs now are ordered.

Now SNGB list the manifolds (C39109/10) as "no longer available".

After bolting mine on i can push a feeler gauge into one of the ports, i.e.:

I guess this means it will leak. Has anyone had lasting success with double gaskets and/or plenty of putty?

I would rather skim those manifolds, taking into consideration that the two ports must still align after being mounted to the head.
