Rain Shields

What is the correct way to mount the rain shields, it seems they are different on every car I look at. Some parts suppliers offer a special mounting bracket while others offer a longer manifold bolt with a female thread in the head, mine has neither of these. I suspect the shields don't do much but I would like to put them on correctly.

Parts manual shows the alternatives. Early cars had the manifold bolts, later cars used the cheaper brackets. Check yr engine number and choose accordingly
I guess we need them to stop the spark plug recesses filling up with water if the car is left parked in the rain.
I wish they weren't necessary. In my case, with twelve 40 kV coils sandwiched between the injectors, I probably don't have a choice ...
