Chrome trim air scoop

Hi all,
Does anyone have any suggestions for fitting the chrome trim that fits around the air scoop below the radiator?

I’ve got a replacement from SNG Barrett, just finding it tricky to fit, especially where the trim is angled at the bottom corners.

Hello Marcus,
This Chin Scoop is an often damaged and incorrectly repaired component, see the following picture




At the two corners where the horizontal surface transitions into vertical, there should be radii of circa 50mm, as shown in the following picture and quite easy to fit the trim supplied by SNGB.



If you're having difficulties getting it to fit, I suspect that your chin scoop has been damaged and repaired with radii that are too small, or in many cases, no radii at all.

That chrome trim is normally made of chromed plastic. Best way to fit is after putting the trim in hot water. It makes it bend around the corners much easier.

Here is a photo of the corner of my air scoop, with the radius I’m dealing with.
I might try the hot water method and see how it goes.

Hello Marcus,
In the picture you Posted, the leading edge of the Chin Scoop looks wrong. It should be a circa 10mm wide strip of metal folded over on to the remainder of the scoop to form an edge that is two thickness of the sheetmetal. Probably not, but it looks a lot like wired edge or rolled edge where the radiused corners are.

You may be right about air scoop but I haven’t checked it again yet.
It’s probably been damaged and repaired at some point it the past.

Get a look at the trim strip on early mini seams.. plastic and easily fitted.

Yes, its the same material, but the ease or otherwise of being able to fit it comes back to the condition of the leading edge of the Chin Scoop. If the corner radii are too small the trim tends to pucker and look rubbish, and if the leading edge is more than just two thicknesses of sheet metal, ie, if someone has wired the edge, the trim will be difficult to fit and again, will look rubbish.

On the std car, with correct radius of scoop corner and metal in reasonable condition it would be fine if all the above are not present don’t bother anyway,Always look after your scoops!!you never know when you need them.. : yeahthat:

Damage to the chin scoop (and hence modified repairs) often results from the front suspension being too low i.e. that damage is a symptom, not a problem. For starters, a correct chin scoop will touch the ground by merely opening the bonnet if the front suspension is too low, or perhaps, if a too long bonnet strut is being used.

My 2+2 looked very similar to the pic above, but now has the correct chin scoop shape.
