I get this high pitch screetch (not me, the car) when I go to full lock on either side. Is this normal or have I got a problem somewhere?
Thanks
John

You may have slack in one of your belts (PAS,fan, alternator)

I take it you have checked the fluid level….

You may have to check the pressure setting on the pump as well as the pressure relief valve in the pump
At full lock there is nowhere for the fluid to go, the pressure relief valve pops open allowing fluid to basically run around in the pump until the rack requires fluid to move at which point the valve shuts off directing pressure to the rack
If that relief valve was not there you blow every seal in the rack It is also referred as a by-pass valve
The service manual shows the correct procedure so as to check it out but you need a couple of hydraulic pressure gauges to do so, any power steering shop should be able to check it out if you don't have the kit

Thanks for your reply Chris. I talked to Splined Hub about this issue and they believe that it is normal for this to happen as it is the pressure relief valve operating (just as you say). They said that there is no problem so long as you don't keep it on full lock.

Hi All
It is the case that at full lock any pas will pop off the valve, just move the steering wheel back a small bit and the noise will disappear as the system maintains constant pressure on either side of the piston that is attached to the rack itself
Cheers
and
Best
Chris
