B W 12 Automatic gearbox
#1 B W 12 Automatic gearbox
My Series 3 E Type as gradually developed problems in stalling when hot and in drive ( foot on brake ) typically at a stop light. Hot idle is set at the prescribed 800 to 750 rpm. We have checked timing, C O and both mechanical and vacuum advance. Any thoughts please. Thank, Phil

1. Vacuum ADVANCE? Are you sure?
2. What ignition system does it have?
3. Are the carbs balanced? (Using a proper air flow measuring device? Balancing by ear is, IMO, NOT balanced) If not balanced properly, you could have it idle at the desired idle speed with only 6 cylinders doing the work, but then no torque reserve for the additional load when going into D or R.
Best Regards
Philip

I had a similar problem on a customers car many years ago and it was found to be the small cylindrical magnets in the "rotor arm". A couple had fallen out so no signal was going to the Opus unit and the car was running on 9 or 10 cylinders. There is enough power in these 12 cylinder cars for a few cylinders not firing to be un-noticed except when at idle, worth a check and will only take 5 mins.

Thanks guys, just to complicate matters, my car has the Lucas fuel injection system circa 1988. Had the conversion done about 8 years ago.

With Lucas injection installed, I think you should be looking at your AAV. This doesn't really sound like a trans problem.
