Hi Guys,
I want to replace the alternator with a modern type. preferably one I can just go and order from repco.
I have seen a few kits for mounting it next to the engine, but I have an A/C pump there.
Does anyone know of a kit available? or have you done one DIY? What alternator did you use?
Thought I would ask around before I spent several hours going through the bosch catalogue to find something that would work.
S3 V12 Frount mount Alternator upgrade.

I also considered a modern alternator and its mounting position.
After talking to a few knowledgeable folk I retained the original Butec. Its big enough power wise. it is certainly well made. I think mine was the original one from new so. if you fit a new modern regulator box
I can not see a reason to change to a modern one............

Replaced the alt with one from a 75-80 series Land cruiser. (110A) Gotta love Toyota stuff. (a 3UZ or 1GZ in an e-type would be awesome.)
Works perfectly, after some rewiring and bracket spacers etc.
Can post pics, if anyone is interested.

I'm keen to upgrade the 50A Butec alternator on my car to at least a 90A unit. When the headlights, fans and aircon all are on simultaneously, the alternator just does not cope.
I would appreciate it someone could provide the make and model no of an alternator that would easily replace the Butec without too much mechanical mods.

Dear Philip,
I fitted one from an XJS in the smog pump position. I did make a custom bracket for it out of 6mm thick angle iron, but you may find it'll fit some other way given your belt configuration will be different.
I expect someone local might be able to rewire yours for a higher output or perhaps think about looking into replacing as many bulbs as you can with LEDs.
kind regards
Marek

I recently fitted one of these:

Went straight in on the original brackets with minimal wiring mods.
Cheers

Importing one of these off-the-shelf kits is not an option for me as by the time I have it in my hands, the price has doubled.
It turns out I have 7 alternators lying around in my cupboards. I will MAKE one of these work and will post on my project once I have something worth sharing.
