#1 stromberg alternative anyone fitted 4 x SU HIF 44?

Post by jivili » Sat Jul 02, 2016 8:14 am

I have been looking at replacing my 4 x stromberg carbs with one of these kits from Burlen which uses 4 x SU HIF 44
Has anyone fitted one and if so how do they perform?
Are they any easier to set up?
Compared to the cost of rebuilding the strombergs this kit appears to be good value.

I converted mine 10 years ago. Not a difficult job but if your car is a manual then you will need the clutch master cylinder adaptor. This is a bit of a pain to fit as you have to remove the master cylinder which means disconnecting and connecting the pedal in the footwell. For me it is an understatement to say this is a rather awkward thing to do.
You should also check the engine mounts are in good order and the engine is at the correct height otherwise the rear RHS carb will foul on the clutch master cylinder banjo bolt.
With regards to set up, I know people on the forum will say if Strombergs are properly set up they are no trouble, but despite this and my numerous attempts (during the 33 years years before the conversion) to set them "just right" there was always a hesitancy at around 2500 r.p.m that was only overcome by opening the throttle more with a sudden surge of power.
The SU's were easier to set up and balance. The power delivery is linear - no surges. The downside is the SU choke doesn't seem to deliver quite as much fuel as the Strombergs therefore you have to crank the engine over considerably longer when cold before it fires.
Was it worth it? in my opinion yes.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for that
I have ordered a set now and hopefully they will perform better than my current Stromberg set up.

I don't think, that they will peforme better , than well adjusted Stromberg carbs. If there at 2500 rpm is a flat spot, the 4 needles must be a little bit less thick at a certain aera, The problem is , to find this part of the needle, which has to be "reshaped". Maybe the needles of the early UK cars have a different needle profile, thah the later needles in US cars. If the UK cars don't have these flat-spat at 2500rps, the problem would be solved, if the 4 needles of the US car would have the same profile of the UK needles. To reshape a needle I use "sanding-paper". It is important the measure the different needles VERY exactly, to find the real difference in diameter.
I have "reshaped" four neddles from a normal 175 Stromberg , that the carbs are working very well on a 6,0 l motor from a 93 limousine. No flat spote anywhere.
