#1 Redline MTL

Post by Heuer » Sat Sep 14, 2013 4:46 pm

At the suggestion of Jerry Mouton on J-L I decided to give this stuff a go in my Moss box and I have to say it works very well allowing quicker shifts without grinding the gears. The synchro is improved no end and I wonder if anyone else here has tried it in either a Moss or Jaguar all synchro box. Not cheap at about four times the cost of ordinary 80w90 and it only comes in quarts so you need two bottles with a fair bit left over after the fill. So ?36 vs ?9 but being synthetic it will probably outlast your ownership. http://tinyurl.com/nmll6xr

Interestingly the people at Zentrum who service my Porsche 993 used it to cure a notchy change to third in my gearbox - standard fix apparently.

But, the Mossbox uses straight 30 and not a hypoid EP oil !

Incidentally, years ago on leyland 77mm 5 speed boxes ( Rover 3500 etc ) a standard fix for extreme notchiness when cold was to use ATF instead of gearbox oil

Yes, but the Moss box with straight 30 oil is a pig to use but with MTL it is a delight. Give it a try and you will see what I mean.

When I bought my car five years ago, the second gear synchro was a little worn and I had to shift carefully (slowly) into second. I put MTL in and saw immediate improvement in shifting into second. During my engine rebuild, I drained the gearbox but did nothing else to it. I refilled with fresh MTL and now I can shift from 1-2 with no hesitation. Close to magic.

David,

When I had my Moss box in the my 3.8 after restoring it I also put MTL in the box on Jerry's suggestion and it worked wonders. Like a different box.

When I removed the box to fit the 5 speed I left the Redline MTL in there just in case.

Just been out in the car again and it is a revelation - a Moss box that actually is a pleasure to use - best ?36 I have ever spent. Now need to know if anyone has tried it in the 4.2 box (c'mon Angus!) as I am sure it will help with the 2nd an 3rd gear synchro's deteriorating after 5,000 miles. So three people with a Moss box, one with a Porsche 911 and the results are really good.

Yes, David. My gearbox is an all synchro matched to a 4.2 engine.

I have never been one to believe much oil companies say about their products but this is all I will use. It improved my all syncro box no end, especially with downshifting from third to second.

A different Red Line spec is used in the Moss versus 4-synchro. I can't remember which is which but it's not MTL for both, allegedly.... 75W90NS I think is the other one. I bought two bottles for the OTS I sold Angus but it went before I could fill the car. That is probably the 4-synchro spec then.

I put Halfords synthetic in the Getrag of my stolen OTS and it helped that poorish change a lot.

As far as I can see Pete there is only one MTL, from E-Type to 911, and it does seem to work. But, hey, for ?36 it has got to be worth a go! No harm done and if you don't like it you can refill with ?8 of Halfords gear oil.

There is only one MTL but there are many Redline oils that are not MTL.

I just remember from Jag-Lovers there were two different oils touted for the two boxes. The fact I specifically bought 75W90 Redline for the all-synchro box in an S2 suggests that's what the other J-L recommendation was. But as you say, if it works, it works, so long as there's nothing in there that screws the synchros or something?

Don't think so as the diff needs LSD additive. Maybe you could use it and put in a bottle of the special additive that SNGB sell. More research necessary on that one but the main advantage of MTL seems to be on synchro's.

You do not use the same Redline oil in the diff as in the gearbox. You use 75W90 GL-5 Gear Oil which, according to Redline, does not need limited slip additive for "clutch type" LSDs.

I've used it in the Moss in my 3.8 for probably 10 years or more and experienced the same improvement from the SAE 30 at the time.

There are several grades of Red Line gear oil and the 4.2 would not use MTL. Probably 75W90 but I'm not sure.

Red Line also make a suitable oil for the LSD. http://www.redlineoil.com/

Yes, I've been using that in my diff. too for a similar number of years. The LSD works correctly and the additive is not required.

BTW, the company is called Red Line, not Redline.

Clive

Why do you say the 4.2 box would not use MTL? I can't see any major difference between it and their MT90 oil. http://www.redlineoil.com/content/files ... 20Info.pdf

David,

I was going from memory of the initial discussions we had on J-L years ago and I think it's because the MT90 has slightly higher viscosity than MTL. The 4.2 box does require a higher viscosity oil.

from the Red Line info you posted:-
MTL is a low 75W, almost a 70W, at very low temperatures and a high 80W, nearly an 85W, at elevated temperatures, providing adequate viscosity to prevent wear and deaden gear noise. MT-90 is a thicker 75W90 version of MTL.

just to add to the previous comments. I have just taken my E type for its post restoration run and having rebuilt the Moss box and filled it with MTL I have to say it is superb. I have only experienced one other Moss box which was awful but not filled with MTL.

I can honestly say that I will not consider changing the Moss box for a syncro box having experienced this . It is a revelation. Of course a MB requires sympathetic driving , but anyone with experience of older gearboxes will find them fine, well if they are as good as mine and filled with MTL. My only possible consideration if I rebuild another E is to have a 5th gear, but I would not change this box for one.
