#1 MOT Time!!

Post by Ikebaddog » Mon Jun 18, 2018 10:57 am

Just had a full service and gearbox oil change done, and although my car is now MOT exempt, I thought it would be good practice to still have it done, result? 1 advisory of slight play in front wheel bearing.
Well happy with that, and the car runs like a dream!

Hooray...

Just so others are aware....although vehicles over 40 years old are exempt (with some exceptions I know) they are not automatically exempt. My understanding is that when the tax is due you can choose to declare an exemption where permitted. If you choose not to declare the exemption your car still needs an MOT and if you drive it on the road with no MOT and have not ticked the exemption box you can be stopped....or so I understand....others may know different...

Speaking with DVLA about my tax renewal I was told you don't declare it until you've decided not to have an MOT. So when the MOT is due later this year, if I decide not to MOT then next June when the tax is due it will automatically register that the car does not have an MOT.

Sorry, not the clearest of wordings but hope that helps for those who go the no MOT route

Well, my MOT was due about three weeks before the exemption came into effect, so I simply waited 'till that date then applied for a (free) road tax.
It all went through with no problem with the site declaring that my car did not require an MOT.
I didn't have to declare that I was or wasn't going to MOT the car .....

Hi Julian

My understanding was that you have to declare the car as tax free when it turns 40. Once you have done that you get the usual renewal form, which you have to renew, but it costs nothing. The MOT is, as far as i understand not linked and completely voluntary, you choose to do or not to do - to quote a more famous writer than me

Since the volentry mot rules changed last month the next time you renew your tax on line you will be asked do you want to be exempt from mot........so if you wish you can declare it exempt......if your mot renewal is befor your tax renewal it is your choice to have an mot or not.....all the details are on the DVLA website... Steve

Ok, I stand corrected :yellow: My MOT and tax came up in March so it wasn't a question.
