hello all,
as part of my proposed refurb programme I would like to fit wider tyres than standard fit [particularly as my car has power steering] to give better road holding and in my view enhanced appearance. any advice on suitable tyre size and type. Many thanks

To get the correct rolling diameter you need the same tyres as the Series 3: 205/70 VR15.
Though you would be advised to try out standard 185-15s even if only to have a benchmark.

Why are you expecting "better road holding" with different tyres? I have 185's on 5" wheels and the road holding is as good as any modern car. When pressing on I can't think I would need any more grip, and I drive very enthusiastically. If you are running out of grip then you are driving beyond the capabilities of the car or your own skill. Stay with 185VR15 tyres.

On a Goodwood track day with my 185/15s, I was almost lifting the inside front wheel on some bends, but the tyres never let go once.
I do agree however that they LOOK better with wider tyres, but probably because of what we're used to now.

I have Michelin XVS15 on my OTS and they do look a bit skinny from the front/rear but by God do they stick to the road. On my FHC I have Dunlop SP 185's and they fill the arches whilst looking wide from the rear/front. All to do with the tread pattern. So If you want the big donut wide tyre look go for the Dunlops although I have to say they don't have the handling of the sticky XVS tyres. Personally I go for the handling as I don't care what following motorists may think. The E-type is acknowledged as the most beautiful car in the world so why worry!

And, in addition to everything said above, if you fit wider tyres than 185 to the front wheels, you will ruin the feel /sensitivity of the steering . Even with PAS, this matters

My e-type Series 2 finally arrived from the US this week.
To start with I need advice / recommendations for following pls.
1. ignition key does not fit door locks. I can only assume the ignition barrel and key was replaced recently. To obtain lock key can I quote the VIN nr ? to suitable supplier to obtain duplicate lock key?
2. no jack present. best source for suitable jack ?

My S2 ignition key does nor fit rhe door lock either (December 69' build). It is not supposed to.
To find the key number, it should be on the lock. To get to the lock, you need to remove the door card etc.
Might just be easier to buy a pair of locks with keys. The mechanism is fiddly though once yo get it out of the door. Once you get them out I would not be at all surprised if they were like this.

I think 205s are fine. Here I am twiddling the wheel no problem I like 185s as well though like Davids. I wonder if 185s would look a little bit more "muscular" on center laced rims as opposed to bead laced rims. They have a different offset which pushes the wheel out into the corner a bit more. XW5721 for a center laced rim?
